NIN - Gary Numan CARS

Hi Justin, first of all, I would like to thank you for sharing with us all your expertise of years of playing and experimenting bass tones! Your talkbass forum is a bass bible :)

I was learning this song for a band, CARS by Gary Numan, and I found this awesome video on youtube, of you and NIN performing it in London : YouTube - NIN: "Cars" with Gary Numan, London 7.15.09 [HD]

Just wanted to know what kind of distorsion/overdrive you use on this! Sound so tight with character and punch! Awesome!!

I also have some technicals questions. You seems to often splitting your bass tone for live situation, by using a clean and a dirty/effect channel. How do you work that. Your bass goes straight to a splitter and after comes the effects or you split at the end of it ?? What kind of splitter you use for that situation ? your both signal are they always ON and the sound engenering do the mix or you switch them yourself?

Thank you for your time,

J-F

Hi, and thank you JF! It's a pleasure to help out and have the discourse on here.

I don't remember very clearly what pedals I used for that tone, but I'll wager that it's a Sans Amp GT2.

As far as a splitter, it's some kind of Radial box that has multiple outputs...but anything will do. Even just a DI box with a "thru" jack...then the XLR clean goes to FOH and everything else comes after. The best thing I've ever used is a Little Labs PCP Distro.

Best,
JMJ
