nitro finish making the neck faster

I have a usacg neck finished by atkinson in nitro


the neck is not as fast, as either my reissue p nor my pedulla (which is probably the greatest neck i've ever played)

Can i sand the nitro neck with a very fine grit sand paper to make it faster or if i want it faster do i have to just refinish it in another finish?

Nitro is not as slick as modern finishes and depending on the chemistry of your hands it can even feel sticky. But before you think about sanding try a good polish first. Gibson Polish and Virtuoso Polish are designed for nitro and leave the neck feeling much more slick.

CAUTION: Don't use any cleaner or polish that contains silicone...ever! Silicone bonds with the nitro and makes finish repairs and re-spraying impossible.

If polish doesn't work to your liking, you can certainly sand the back of the neck and then apply an oil finish (tung oil or gunstock oil/Tru Oil) with relative ease.

Nitro typically feels tacky and as result is slow to me. Poly or unfinished works much better to me.

You can slick it up with some 000 steel wool without causing any lasting damage.

I don't think he wants to wait for several years!

I've used 0000 steel wool on several necks and it works just fine. Never had a problem with residue. Just wipe it down good when you are finished. The ScotchBrite idea is a good one though as it would be a bit cleaner.

Scotchbrite is those dark green plastic scrubby pads, sometimes they come on a sponge, usually they do not. Cheaper to get them without the sponge. You can get them at any grocery store.

If you make a trip to your local home improvement store you can get Scotchbrite pads in varying "grits" which will allow you to get something equivalent to 000 or 0000 steel wool. The stuff on kitchen sponges is all over the map in terms of aggressiveness.
