Nitro vs Poly Finish in Black Jazz Bass

Sounds like you've decided, but I will tell you that I have a nitro Aztec Gold P Bass that I ordered as a closet queen (no dings, no nicks) that I am very careful with but it very easily gets finish marks, chips etc. IF you are not ok with that, avoid nitro. My two other basses (Epiphone, Reverend) are more durable finishes and look like brand new, even after years of use

Olympic White to Black (body and matching headstock, like the '65 models).

after seeing a couple of images i'm not sure if i want a worn out over time instrument.

Beauty! Great example. I like the bits of the white basecoat showing through on the body (basecoats were not used on the headstocks). This is a good example of another detail; only black matching headstocks had the 'clipped' logo-only decals - and they were placed like this, something the Custom Shop still gets wrong (they place them in the corner closer to the nut rather than more centered like this).

So overall the bass looks great, but if you look closely you can see the type of chips and such that happen to a nitro finish just with normal handling. I previously had a P bass with a modern finish and none of this happened. It's all good, just be aware that you cannot keep a nitro finish pristine.

I love nitro finishes.

But for black a satin matte poly (with maple!) is the answer.

For whatever it's worth, my 0.02¢ says go with a satin black in poly…urethane or polyester, whichever is more practical…because gloss black instruments basses are a dime a dozen. I should know…I have three already and, if I wanted another, I could find several more parts and/or completed instruments with very little effort.

And this one isn't 100% up to date. I did a drop-fill job on the cracks to keep them from spreading. The aesthetic bump was a secondary consideration…but definitely welcome.
