No idea how to use my new Ripper

I have never seen a mahogany Ripper, Grabber or G3. They were all maple or alder bodies.

That's why I just said common for Gibson. I really don't know much about the bass, so I had to go on general info about the company and their habitual wood choices.

Thanks for clarifying, though - I like random bass trivia. I might have to go back and edit my post.

Dirnt played a G3 not a Ripper. It looked like a Ripper body shape wise but the headstock is different and it has 3 single coils versus 2 humbuckers.

Gene Simmons played a Ripper though.

He said that he "had" one, so I don't know that he ever used it with Green Day or even owns it anymore, I was just going off of what he said. I actually googled it because the Ripper, Grabber, etc are so similar looking and I didn't want to give out any false information - hard to appear to be intelligent AND a sarcastic ***hole with bad information.

Interesting. I remember reading this now. He said he owned one but sold it because he couldn't get a great sound out of it. He was most seen in the old days with a G3. I don't remember ever seeing a picture of him and the Ripper he was talking about.

I had one in the mid 70s. Bill Lawrence designed the electronics as well as those of the L-6S guitar that was brought out at the same time. The Varitone has a couple of out of phase settings that are really thin. Mine was Maple/Maple-very hard sound. I tried roundwounds on it and hoped it would be a Faux Alembic-Fail!
The late Rick Danko and the late T-Bone Wolk probably had the right idea. They put flatwounds on it and played it with a pick and sounded wonderful. YMMV

This is the first times I've ever heard reference to the L6-S. I inherited one from my uncle, and I really like it's half strat/half LP style sound.

Nice bass, OP. I like the Ripper the best of the bunch (grabber/ripper/g3). I don't know squat about them, but I would advise fiddling with the knobs randomly till you find what you like. Seriously. KNowing what a knob is "supposed" to do sometimes makes me adjust it while htinking "I need more mid" or "i need less bass" when in reality I need to just find the sound a like and not really worry about how I got there. YMMV and all that jazz.

I love that song! I thought by that point his G3 was broken and he didn't play it live anymore.

Regardless man were they great at that time. Still good, but those are my favorite years for Green Day.
