Well, it was kinda brought up as part of the “weird songs” thread. Anyway, why not take it upon yourself? I only post ones of those who meant something to me, a few got no response, and keep in mind, depending on who it is, there’s going to be an older crowd that will mumble, “who?”, as well as a younger crowd doing that from the other direction. Honestly, I didn’t hear of it until that thread here.

RIPs can be kinda awkward. But RIP Melanie. You made at least one very memorable song. Most of us can’t say that.
Yeah well... She was regarded as a bit of a novelty in her day. But she had a voice on her, that's for sure.

I am a long-time fan of Melanie. I saw her first appearance on the David Frost show sometime in the 60's. What a powerful and soulful voice; it seemed like the audience was stunned after hearing her sing.
I have several of her albums and some of her greatest songs never made it as big hits. In fact, her biggest hit was "Brand New Key" which was really a silly song that probably hurt her career more than helped it. If you have a chance to listen to her early albums, pay attention to the songs that didn't get any airtime on the radio; you might be amazed.
RIP Melanie, there's now another powerful voice playing with the other greats.

I think Brand New Key is Shakespere level metaphor, the song played on every radio in every car, put her on the map, but it wasn't a dumb song...the shuffle beat was more suggestive than the lyric or the schoolyard melody, which she aced...the song is guileless, and helped the whole country rid itself from unnecessary shame in growing up. She wan't a one hit wonder either she had a long career, but the initial hit helped make that possible.
Herbie Flowers Bass on "Lay Down" is awesome, give it a listen and prove me wrong.
Oh! THAT Melanie. If OP had mentioned her by first name alone, I would immediately have known who he was referring to. Yes, I remember her too; was powerfully affected by her first record. One of many underappreciated female artists from that era. Yes, absolutely; R.I.P.

I remember several songs before brand new key. But I only remember Alexander beetle from after that. Can't say it set the world on fire.
Thinking about it now though, she might have been a big influence on one Poly Styrene from X-ray Spex.

Yup, that's a REAL good one. Herbie's lines are so groovy.
I’d never heard of her. Googled, found brand new key, which turns out I HAVE heard in movies and tv shows before. It’s great for those quirky indie kinda films. Seems like she may have been an inspiration for quite a few folks in the indie folk movement a decade or so ago. A lot of those tunes sound very much like her aesthetic.
