No more 15s for me!

I have tryed every configureation,410 +115,2-15 210,410+215,and have settled on the 2 410 cabs.
It has the punch,drive and that "ever wanting" low bottom!

Our band plays in drop"C" so we need that low bottom throwing straight out at the croud.


I have researched the idea of an 810 and the amount of AIR in which the 10 inch speakers put out is almost twice that of a 15.

I also see alot of pros using this configuation so im sold as of now.

It's not just about air though, alot of it's about the speed at which the speakers respond. (In general) 15s react slower to signals then 10s, giving a less apparent attack in the sound.

I like both to be quite honest, no cab I've heard can give the thick sound of a 15 cab while sounding tight and full range and 10s go nicely on top of them for a little definiton.

Alot of pros use 15s too.

A 15" does a nice bass tone. I currently have a VX115 because the 12" I had sounded too boxy. Now the 15" is missing mid-range. So I added an XL210 sitting on top and it sounds sweet with a 200 watt head. I might drop the 15 cab and get another XL210. Already ordered a 500 watt head to go with it. You can never have enought bass equipment. Somebody stop me.

I have made the almost exact change. Been a 15 guy forever....just picked up a couple of Epifani UL's 4x10 config for the very same reasons you just mentioned Bradley!
the 8x10's sound incredible and respond much quicker (attack wise) than my 15's ever did.

The 8x10 configuration should be classified as WMD's for bass players. It's the best setup for rock, metal, or any style that calls for tight, punchy bass and mids. While 15's have their place for sure, at stage volume most standalone sealed 15" cabs I've tried seem to "boom" in all the wrong places, while ported 15" cabs can sound fantastic, IMHO.

Lot's of different speakers can do the same job, but if 8x10s can't do it, it can't be done.

(Oh please, bring on the flames. I'm getting used to it.)

To get chest thumping lows it is not your bass rig that counts ... it is the PA system ... A big pa with a few thousand watts and some 18" folded horn subs give you that concert sound ...

+1 ... I'll say. That's why I'm totally digging my Mesa Venture .. the MPluse600, 600 tube driven mosfet watts, driving a ported Mesa 2x12 cab. Sweet.

I must say that I do not like 10's in general, but prefer the sound of 12s + 15s. to my ears, a very nice combination is a 1x12 w/tweet (slightly rolled off) + 1x15 w/tweet (slightly rolled off). If you can adjust the crossover, then (5k) on the 15 and 3k on the 12 is truly wonderful to my ears.

***Buuuuuuurrrrrrnnnn!!!!!*** your feeble 8x10 will never do proper Reggea! :p

To be honest I'm finding my NV215 a hell of alot tighter sounding then most ported 15's I've played through. Maybe it's just cos it's a superawesometastic cab though. I do enjoy the sound of a typical 10 just a little too much attack for me, despite playing heavy rock music. 2x15+2x10 setups are by far my favourite balance, with plenty of 6 inch tweeters involved of course (getting at least 1 on the custom built 2x10 I'm never gonna be able to afford).

That's what I use, minus a tweeter on the 15. 15 is full range and the 12 isn't crossed over. My rig kills. Punch, depth, easily faster than I am. Done.
