No more ebay(basses) for me!

The longer the story the bigger the lie! Obviously found a better buyer.

VERY disappointing, I am sure but at least it cost you only time. I've never had this happen, but never buy from newbies, either.

Good luck with your next purchase. The classifieds here are a good place to start.

I sold a Fender Jazz V on eBay when I thought I'd keep my Ibby 5er. I dropped the tuning a step and shipped it off after the guy seemed so excited. After he had it a week, he emailed me and said it was unplayable and out of tune. He wanted his money back.

I explained that those little twisty things at the end of the neck can be used to change the pitch of each string, bringing it back to BEADG. He wasn't buying it, and filed a claim through PayPal...and won! My account was charged for the refund and the bass came back. I decided to keep it, after all, and sold the Ibby.

I'm glad it worked out that way, because I really like it!

I can blame only myself, the seller has a 12 rating with 92.9% feedback but all of the post sale communication seemed perfect. I know, there is the possibility it REALLY was stolen, and I did get my money back (again!) so there's no harm, but after the horror stories following my last episode I'm feeling a bit snakebit. Is there anyone I can trust out there to buy a used bass from?

A) Is there anyone you can trust out there to buy a used bass from? Yes there is: Anyone who doesn't have 92.9% feedback. You answered your own question.

B) You got your money back, so why the bitching?

How's this for a shocker!

I get an email from the seller two days ago that the bass was recovered from a local pawn shop just 24 hours after it was stolen. He's reclaimed it and offered it back to me prior to relisting it on ebay. I sent back the money he refunded to me - heck I still want the bass - and tonight it's allegedly on it's way to me via FedX. He says I'll have a tracking number in the morning.

Maybe I'll get my new Gretsch yet - and maybe(?) I was a bit too quick to judge - will never know for sure but I'm keeping an eye open for the FedX truck come Monday!

Seems I got played this week on the `bay. I won a very nice computer for a ridiculously low price (bidding ended at around 4 AM - no competition). Next morning, I had a tracking # and a thank-you note from the seller, going great lengths to tell me how much my purchase was helping this single mother out. After about four days, USPS still says the "label printed, awaiting arrival of package for shipping" thing. Now, USPS doesn`t always update with regularity - I`ve gotten things before their site shows them in transit. But I called, and sure enough, had not been turned in yet. Emailed the seller - she just has a "Oh dear" attitude. I inititated an investigation - computer was never found, and seller can`t tell me specifically what her local P.O. has to say about it. I told my wife "Just wait - she`ll offer a refund on Friday (payday). I got used for a payday loan, I thought. Sure enough, she did. Offered, anyway. When I replied, she now says for me to take the tracking # and file the claim myself - for a package that there is no proof of ever even being handed to them. Siccing Paypal on her in the AM. Ebay ain`t what it used to be, it seems. I put a deposit on a car a few months ago, and when I went to pick it up, it wasn`t even the same car. Seller refused to refund deposit. Paypal settled it within hours, and the guy called me screaming.

Uh... I hope you did this transaction through Ebay or something. Otherwise you might not have any recourse if the bass never shows up and he vanishes from thin air with your money...

I did it thru Paypal and he and I are both registered users so I have protection against non-delivery. While his story did sound strange, the more I've conversed (emailed) with him, the more genuine I think he is. IF it was stolen, I'm not so sure my original story would have sounded any better had it happened to me. A few days will tell the tale.

Looks as if this story has a happy ending after all. Fedex tracking confirms the bass (or at least a package) from the seller is in their possession and will be delivered to me on Wednesday. Still don't know if the "stolen" story was true or if a better deal fell thru - although the seller did name their Buy it Now price and I met that - so maybe it was stolen - either way, my new bass will be here next Wednesday!

You're lucky ebay ain't what it used to be. Otherwise you'd have a b*tch of a time getting your money back. ebay is better - for buyers - now than it has ever been. You can buy with complete confidence, because if you're not happy, you are virtually guaranteed to get your money back (provided you pay through PayPal)

You`re right about that. I guess to cliarify, I meant the marketplace ain`t what is was in the early days.

The drawback to that, is that as a seller, you have little to no protection. The card companies all protect the buyers to the point where people can commit blatant fraud and get away with it. I know business people who have had charge-backs done against them on products, where the confirmation went through, and was even signed by the person that ordered it. They claimed it never got there, and the card company sided with them. Then you've got the people that think they can buy stuff and "try it out", then send it back. Great for them... But now the business person is stuck with a used item. It's BS. The card companies support buyers, because the buyers are the ones paying minimum payments every month, and the card companies are making money off them. They couldn't care less if a business is getting screwed.
