No music talent dad, needs help for son!!

My son has been playing bass for two years now. He started off with a Fender beginner box set. He has some talent and wants to upgrade. He will be playing in his schools jazz band. I have been looking at the Ibenaz sr305. He wants a 5 string, and one that he can play in Jazz band and when he is rocking out in the garage. Any help or opinions would be great, I have no musical skill or knowledge. I am looking to spend in the $300 to $400 range

Welcome, and kudos for wanting to help. Truth is, almost ANY bass will work in any style of music you care to name. So I suggest taking him to a store and browse around, and get him what he likes.
Also, more often than not, the bass he has already is just fine, but he really just needs a better amp.
EDIT: he wants a fiver? Browsing time.

+1 on this. Move to a 5'er takes some browsing time at the music store. Take him to several and let him play everything. Don't limit him on what he plays or likes. Then when he finds it, go from there. Shop around. Here is a good place to find great deals on great basses, amps and everything else. Shop though. Don't accept the local music store price as a bargin until you shop around and see. My daughter plays in the middle school band and I donated to the program a MTD Kingston. Great bass.

but if you give us a budget we could still make some suggestions that you could relay to him while hes looking or keep you prettty well informed

Thanks for the info so far. I am looking to spend in the $300 to $400. My son is putting up 1/2 the money so I want to get him a good one. He has tried out the Ibenez sr305 and like the slimmer neck. We are looking for info on comparable models so he can make sure he is getting the best one for his money

Cool, at 400.00 you can start looking at used MIJ Fenders, that would be an awesome upgrade for your son.Great product, great action and good resale.

I had an Ibanez Soundgear 5-string (here's a picture of me playing it - years ago)...really nice sounding bass, great feel, low action. Good choice for the price.

I disagree that Ibanez are "bland"; they would work nicely for a HS jazz band.

If you son likes the feel of the SR series neck, you might want to step up to a used SR505 or SR535, for a little better quality than the SR305. But for the price, the Hohner I mentioned earlier beats the SR305.

That's picture is from 2 years ago? Looks more like 22 years ago LOL.

OP, get your kid whatever he has played and likes - take him to Guitar Center to try stuff out, then go back by yourself and surprise him with a gift under the tree - very cool btw.

My parents never played music or supported my music (until now that I've been playing almost 10 years) I bought all my past basses myself. You're one cool pop!
