I grew up playing "Fire", "Manic Depression", "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze". I always thought Noel was very tasteful and original back then - very sad to lose another one of my earliest influences at such a young age.

Noel Redding R.I.P.

I grew up playing "Fire", "Manic Depression", "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze". I always thought Noel was very tasteful and original back then - very sad to lose another one of my earliest influences at such a young age.
Sad day, like Big O I grew up playing the lines. I was playing All Along The Watchtower, Crosstown Traffic and others just this past weekend with my band.
We'll miss you Granny, Hendrix's nickname for Noel's frizzy hair. we'll miss you man.

He used to play in a little Bar in Clonakilty in West Cork, Ireland on Fridays.

He was so cool.
He sat in for a gig at the Haight St Fair in San Francisco about 5 yrs ago with one of his friend's bands. The band just sucked horribly but Noel was totally into it and the rock star attitude was completely absent. Top notch musician and top notch human. Much respect to Noel, RIP.

I had never gotten into Hendrix or Noel's bass lines until recently. We did Cross Town Traffic and You Got Me Floatin' in the last band I was in and they were the most fun songs to play in our set.

An early infleunce of mine as well, it's a sad day for bass players world wide. By the sounds of some of these threads I read he was a good, kind and giving man. Bass player, famous or not a man like that is always remembered and missed. It's up to us to keep his memory alive, play a Noel lick and have a toast to the Experience.

The influences I had from Noel are too numerous to mention. But he had a major impact on my sound.
A lot of guys say I'm too 'busy'. Noel was busy. You can be busy when you have a genius with you, because they force you to explore the limits of your ability.
The Bruce/Clapton sound, in a analoguous, but not similar way, allowed Jack to expand his horizons, and gave him a free vehicle to experiment in, much the same way as The Experience.
Noel started as a guitar player, as did some of us.
He knew the scale harmonies on the frets well. He was one of the first rock bassists with the inclination and the freedom from production restrictions to exemplify bass playing on recordings.
Specifically, I refer to 'Rainy Day, Dream Away/1983 a Merman I Should Be' on Electric Ladyland , a copy of which should be in every rock aficionados CD repertoire.

RIP One of the first highly visible players that inspired others of his time to pick up the bass. I remember last year he auctioned off all of his Hendrix stuff and pretty much anything and evrything even associated with the Experience and that time period. I wonder if he kind of knew or something?

Man, some of his lines were the first things I ever learned at all on bass.
I haven't kept up with his post-Experience stuff- did he go back to guitar or stay on bass?

All Along the Watchtower and much of Electric Ladyland including 1983... had Hendrix on bass, actually.
Still, Redding is fantastic. No doubt he'll live for a long time as an integral part of one of the most important bodies of rock music ever recorded.
