Noel Redding- say what?

I have played off and on for years in a Jimi cover band and know most of the Hendrix stuff by heart. There are some great bass lines in the Redding catalog, just like Cox has some great stuff. It's common knowledge that Jimi and Chas figured out most of the bass lines and told Noel how to play them. Noel deserves respect in my opinion anyway. His timing was very good.

It's Noel. I have a Ladyland boot that has several takes of them going through "Come On", one of them Jimi breaks a string and they talk about it for a minute.

Well said and if I can add to your point.....I think that's what it is for me with Noel. To me JHE wasn't really about groove, it was a rock bad unlike anything from that time. Jimi, Noel & Mich were fantastic together IMO.

At that time in the mid 60s i think only Jack Bruce. remember that Jet Harris was said to be the best bass player off the early 60s.
i think that if jack had played with Jimi then the whole feeing of the JHE would have changed too as he would have been singing too.
i think it would have been very open and much more Jazz basses like Cream were.

Noel's timing was superb, as well as the tone and technique which you mentioned. Lately, I've especially enjoyed listening to the 4CD box set "Winterland."

Redding had a horrible grindy tone with no proper bass end. I've heard a lot of Hendrix stuff and Redding was always right up in the guitar space sonically. Not sure how Billy Cox was different in that regard.

There is nothing wrong with your post, of course. But this is getting like putting out forest fires here. I have other things to do. If people want to bash Noel Redding, take credit away from him, and all that, I hope they enjoy themselves. Like I said, I really have other things to do and would rather focus my energy elsewhere, unless I see something totally outrageous that I can't keep from responding to. So far, I'm not seeing anything like that.

I will confirm what Rocker wrote here about NR playing bass part for Come On Pt. 1. In the Hendrix Sessions book Noel talks about playing this, how the take on the album was the 12th take, etc. So, now I know. For some reason I thought Jimi overdubbed that one himself later, but according to the Hendrix Sessions book, it's Noel!

some of the bass lines in some Hendrix sounds are really good. i think one of my fav is "hey baby (new rising sun) but I think its Billy Cox that did the bass on it.

I started playing bass at age 16 after playing guitar for two years. (I'll be 60 next month) Noel Redding was a big influence on me, and I always loved his playing. I prefer it to Bill Cox' playing with Hendrix. I've read many, many interviews over the years but there is only one quote I "remember." Redding was asked if he learned anything about guitar from Hendrix. He responded that he had been playing for years and that "Hendrix didn't have to teach him anything." Although hard to discern from a print interview, I didn't detect arrogance in his statement. I could be wrong.

On another related note, I always felt Mitch Mitchell would have been the perfect replacement for Keith Moon after his untimely death.
