Noise goes when touching tuner, bridge etc,.

Hello,

Just got a new P bass and it has a slight humming noise which I find annoying. However the noise pretty much completely goes away if I put my hand on the tuner. I presume I am grounding it so does this just mean I must have a bad earth somewhere?

Thanks.

This is quite common. I would assume if it goes away when you touch the bridge, it also goes away when you touch the strings (ie when you are playing)?

If it gets to be too much of a problem, one thing that would definitely help is shielding the bass with copper foil or conductive paint (there is a tutorial stickied at the top of the pickups forum).

Earth fault with the bass if it doesn't happen with other instruments.
I find it amazing that 'so called' reputable manufacturers allow instruments out of their factories in this condition.
Show me anyone who doesn't alter their instrument when they get it home. Everyone at least puts decent strings on. Most also set up the intonation and action which should have been done.
Surely any electric instrument should be shielded as standard!

They trade on their name, which often should be mud.
The cheapest components like pots, flimsy wiring, under-powered p-ups, bad earthing etc. all contribute to their failings.

We would consider it outrageous if a car manufacturer released vehicles which buyers had to 'trick-up' before they were driveable.

It is a scandal.

Thanks guys. The bridge ground is fine and connection to pots looks good. I will try shielding it all next week as I am fitting a new pick guard anyway and see if that helps.

The noise is not exactly loud, but I am just a bit of a perfectionist with noises!
