Noisy Line-In On Behringer Xenyx 802?

I recently bought a Behringer Xenyx 802 to monitor myself through headphones while practicing. The Xenyx has 2 mono line ins (1 & 2) that share a preamp with the mic inputs, and 2 stereo line ins (3-5) that are by themselves.

I noticed that when I run my basses into inputs 1 & 2 (that have the mic preamp), the bass is super noisy and distorted. If I run it into inputs 3-6, everything is fine.

I want to be able to run into inputs 1 & 2 because they feature have a pan. This would help when I'm learning songs by ear.

Does anyone know why inputs 1 & 2 are so different from 3-6?

Sounds as if you're overdriving the xenyx

turn down your bass level....

you can "fake" pan by panning just the recorded music source

inputs 1 and 2 have gain controls, inputs 3-5 do not, correct? I have the very small version of that mixer on my pedalboard and setting the gain right is probably the issue. I'll have to go look at the mixer to refresh exactly what the knobs are, but it sounds like you are setting the gains too high. Also, note that the 1/4" inputs are not instrument inputs, they are line inputs, which is a different impedence and changes the sound. I run my vt bass into one channel and my synth bass keyboard into another and then the master out of the mixer into my DI to go to the house, so I am sending a line level signal to the mixer from both devices. For practicing plugging into the line input would be fine, but I wouldn't do it for performance as it really changes the sound (and not in a good way to my ears).
