Noisy preamps on Touchmix

This is unfortunate and has to be rare I hope.

I also find it hard to believe that corrosion is causing the problem. Maybe some corrosion on a ribbon connector but then it'd be a quality issue for them. Get some pictures from them. Maybe they contaminated it the first time you sent it in - i.e. with rosin cleaner.

Did you buy with a credit card? Some cards extend the warranty beyond what the manufacturer does. Sometimes this is free and is very good coverage.
Anything is possible at this point. I'm at their mercy so if they decide to tell me to get lost I'm SOL.

I bought the item from our good friend MF. They offered a gold coverage for like $100. I declined believing that qsc has a good warranty. I'm sure they're laughing at me now. I can't blame them because if I can kick my own rear, I'd do it at the moment.

The prosound folks basically replied...
"Did a beer/coke get spilled onto the mixer?
That will corrode the crap out of it pretty quick.....
and no, that would not be a warranty issue.
"

and
"Corrosion. Really?
How can anyone expect warranty coverage on corrosion?
"

So....
Did something get spilled on it? If so, I can understand the warranty denial.. of course, proving you didn't (if a spill did not happen) is going to be a tough one. Perhaps something was spilled on it that you did not know about??
I can understand QSC denying it since corrosion should not happen without induced moisture.
I assume they would declare it was user induced, hence the denial! :(

They would not be right in denying it because there are so many factors that play into the damage. That's their claim. Who knows what really caused the corrosion. Lesson learned for me. No more qsc products.

One thing is for sure, sucks to be the one going through this. I'm not asking for anyone to feel sorry for me. I just hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.

I can honestly say that there was no spilling liquid on the unit. Corrison could've happened due to other factors. Who knows...but I'm at their mercy so I'm SOL.

Regardless, it was an easy way to burn $1300 for me. Obviously they don't give a sheet. Definitely the last $ I ever spend on their products.
Tom,
corrosion doesn't just "happen" in a device like that.
Is it possible that it might have been caused by storing it in the cold then moving it into a warm environment and getting internal condensation?
That shouldn't be an issue, but might be? idk.
As I've mentioned before, my experience with QSC has been the opposite of yours, so the whole episode sounds weird! I doubt QSC is trying to put one over on you. The corrosion came from somewhere.

If something did get spilled on your TM16 - that you did not know about (say at a gig when you were "away") - NO company on the planet will warranty that repair. That is specifically EXCLUDED as a condition at that QSC link I posted above.
If that's the case (and I'm not saying it is) then the fault from QSC's perspective is yours. No warranty.

The history I've had with the unit for the limited time I've owned it has a lot to do with how I feel about the situation. I do honestly question the quality and reliability of the unit. It is a possibility that someone spilled a drink on it that I didn't know about. It could be due to extreme change in weather. It could be due to anything. Heck, it could even be a bogus excuse by qsc to get off the hook in having to repair the unit on their dime. Regardless, Qsc doesn't give a crap about it. They've made their decision and I can't do anything about it except bit chhh about it on talkbass, so please let me... When I've had to shell a good chunk of my hard earned money to purchase the unit and did not get the product or the service I expected, I should have the right to express my frustration.

You have an opinion and I respect that but (no offense) I don't agree with you.

That said, I'm going to end this conversation here. I'm out!

It seems reasonable to assume that the board is badly corroded. There's not much reason to lie about that, since all you have to do is open up the case to verify its condition.

And circuit boards don't just corrode badly by themselves.

After doing a search online I couldn't find one complaint about QSC service.

If their standard MO is to pull every sleazy service trick in the book, there would be a damning trail online.

Not sure where you're looking but it's more common then you think. A quick glance through the Qsc user forum under the Touchmix Support section:

1) Terry posted "Channel Noise":
For the second time in a couple of months, my TM16 suddenly started having static on a channel. First it was channel 6. I sent it in and they fixed it. Now it is channel 14. I called support today and talked to a gentleman but no one has called or preferably emailed me back. This happened at a show this last Saturday and we do not have any extra channels. Really messed up the night to not have that channel. This is unacceptable. I have done sound and played in bands for 40 years and this has been the least reliable piece of equipment I have owned. I need it replaced or its time to move on to a more reliable mixer. To top it off I have to shut the system down every time I bring it up because the touch screen does not work....every time. The display shows but it will not recognize touching the screen. They were supposed to fix that the first time but didn't. I am losing faith in QSC.

2) Felix "Noise on the main outputs":
Hi everybody,

i used the Touchmix 8 at Home with Yamaha HS80 M Active Monitores and nothing else.
I Used Balanced Cabel ( 3 Meter ) on the Main Output of the TM8... I Changed the cable no differences.
I Have Noises, loud Noises Hi and low Noises and i can hear the HD HGST Touro S 7,200 RPM 500 Gb working on the Speackers.
Whats wrong ????
on the TM8 i have the system version V2.1.5035 running.

Thanks a lot

Felix from Germany

3) Steve "TM8 Shuts off in the middle of our show":
Hi , I have had my TM8 for a few months now ,I had a couple of issues at first , the screen has freezed and I had a power issue where by it kept turning on and off several times ,I put this down to not running the latest firmware. Last nights gig was a first , it shut down mid song .I pulled the plug and waited a few minutes then plugged it back in to which it powered up then shut down again so I did the same and this time it came back on .I only had a couple of songs left to do so was able to finish the show . The firmware is Upto date so now I am worried as I have 5 gigs to do from tomorrow. I also have a friend that has had the same problem and has had it replaced with a new one . My problem is I am from the UK but bought my TM8 from the Guitar Centre in New York and I cannot be without the mixer due to being a very busy musician , is there a UK support centre that I can call as this is rather urgent .

Thanks
Steve

4) Pete "Power Problem TM16"
Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone out there is having power problems like us?
We bought a tm16 a couple of months ago and if you touched the power lead in any way it would switch off. It was ultra sensitive and sometimes it would switch off even if we didn't touch it.
We sent the unit back and got a new one but the same problem has started again. We even bought a spare power lead on thomann (€95!!!) and it has also let us down!
Clearly there is a problem with the power connection on there units.
We treat our gear very carefully and there is no good reason for this.
Are we alone in our experience?

Pete

5) Mas Lubbock "Unplugged TM16...Now no input signal"
I performed a gig...unit worked perfectly.
Another musician pulled the power before the unit was placed in standby (something I'm always careful to do).
Brought everything to the next gig and...nothing. The unit is not receiving any input from mics or instruments on any of the channels.
Is there a way to reboot the system without resetting everything?
If I reset the mixer to factory presets, will my 'scenes' stored on internal memory be wiped out?

Need I continue?

There's an important difference between the quality of the manufactured product and quality of the service provided by their service department.

There's nothing mentioned above about being screwed over by the service department.

I saw the complaints about equipment problems and failures. That's not the same as dinging QSC's service department's actions for your issue of a corroded board.

Tom,
I think you are missing the point of what is being said here..
#1 - no-one is saying you are wrong. I know and understand your position/feelings on the topic.
#2 - there are complaints about the product.. I think we understand that also
#3 - you sent it in for noise and they found corrosion on the main board

Given #3, taking QSC's Service Dept perspective - THEIR logical conclusion - unless there is a liquid container built into the device that broke - is that liquid caused the corrosion by entering the device, which (as I posted above) would EXCLUDE it from warranty coverage.

Putting myself in their shoes, you really CAN'T blame QSC for denying the warranty claim. Everything you have stated about your claim [in this thread] indicates that the corrosion was caused by exposure to liquid (see below). They don't know you personally...what are they supposed to do?

WARRANTY EXCLUSIONS (sub set):
  1. Damage caused by improper use, care, or maintenance or failure to follow the instructions and/or maintenance and repair recommendations contained in the User Manual, or at www.qsc.com,
  2. Damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, exposure to liquids, fire, earthquake, acts of God, or other external causes,
We're saying it's an unfortunate set of circumstances.
I'm sorry it happened and get that you are upset, but I believe it's unfair to blame QSC.

I'm not really buying the liquid corrosion story. I can't see how human consumable liquids would corrode a modern circuit board to beyond use.

I'd say if there's gunk on the works, it can be washed out.

Tektronix: Washing Your Instrument

You're absolutely right. I don't know what everyone else in this thread was thinking.

Break out the hose.

While you're at it pour a coke or a salty liquid over your phone.

:rollno:
Think about it. If someone poured in a coke or a margarita, or something or If you drop your cell phone in a porcelain punch bowl. Wash it off as soon as possible with clean water. Water hurts nothing as much as Impurities do.

I'm not a bass player but I found this thread searching to see if other Touchmix owners have also had bad channels show up on their touchmixes.

I have the Touchmix 8 model and already 3 of my channels have noisy preamps. The first happened when I plugged in a Rode VXLR adapter for a Wireless Go mic while power was on and phantom was on. I saw the meter peg and immediately noticed it was noisy after that.

The other two went south sometime after I plugged in VXLR adapters on those channels. I know I used a wireless mic on one of those two channels and it wasn't noisy, and then 3 or 4 cycles later, without removing the VXLRs (trying to not wear out my XLR jacks) and without any hotplugging, I power up with a regular lav mic on that channel, and it's noisy. I believe it's just been normal power cycling with those VXLR adapters sitting unused in the jacks. If true, those VXLR adapters are deadly to Touchmix inputs!

I'll be picking up another Touchmix tonight, but now I'm worried about how fragile the inputs are. I'm thinking I can't risk any plugging or unplugging of any XLR devices without powering down the mixer and removing the power supply.

I've had the Touchmix over a year and use it several times a week for my work (depositions) and I've moved AT831R mics around with power on, but no preamps got noisy until I started using Wireless Go mics.

Since I first posted in this thread, I have used TM8, TM16 and TM32 units on numerous occasions, but at FOH and using the TM8 as a drum feed to another console.
Not one single issue with ANY of them.
You won't generally wear out XLR jacks tho'... :)

I'm hoping that using the TRS input for line level will bypass the issue, assuming it's all in the preamp section. If that works, running two mics thru an RDL mx4L mixer will restore those two inputs. I can also use the 9/10 and 11/12 TRS inputs for another 4 mics if necessary (thru an mx4L to boost them to line level, of course)
