Non-Standard Pickup Size Swap

Nice! Got any pics you can post?

Yep! This ought to give you an idea what I’m going for.

Here it is in R & D phase; that’s an EMG Select SES single-cool with broken-off mounting ears from my junk parts box. The white mounting ring was hacked out of a piece of old Strat pickguard. This configuration sounded great, although it’s a really low-output pickup. Might try a Strat-sized blade humbucker Instead.

Here it is, post-die grinder mistake, while I was reconsidering the whole pickguard idea. This is a humbucker out of a buddy’s “Chibson” LP-knockoff he bought to hotrod. The stock pickups were kind of midrangy and microphonic. I thought that might translate well to a lower-gain P-bass situation, but haven’t wired it up to try it yet. If this ends up sounding as good as the Strat-shaped pickup, I might end up enlarging the pickguard hole to fit and the die-grinder mistake won’t matter after all. But an early experiment with a Barcus-Berry guitar humbucker suggested that the wider string-sensing area was a step in the wrong direction; it had plenty of sonic mass but the low notes lost some clarity. It was kind of like playing an electric tuba or something.

I've been listening to a lot of samples of Nordstrands lately. I ordered Big Blades for my 5-string disaster (I'll have to dig it out and post a pic of it too, but most of the mess probably won't show up), and bought a used Big Single here on TB earlier today. The Big Single will put something in my hand to see how it fits and how much I'll need to cover up, plus it will give me a chance to wire it up and see how it sounds. I have a brand new Glockenklang pre sitting on my bench too; not sure if that will go to the 5-string of the Yamaha. For testing I may just wire the Big Single straight to the jack

Dude! That is AWESOME!!! There are so many gorgeous basses on here, and I love them all (I have one or two myself), but I love seeing something like that where the purpose is just to GET THINGS DONE!

Unsolicited aesthetic idea for that bass: mount the pickup however it works, wire it straight to the output jack, then cover the holes with duct tape. ¡Dale duro!

Ha! Not sure I’m quite ready to revisit my rat guitar of yesteryear with various band stickers (functionally equivalent to duct tape) covering unused pickup holes...but I’ll put that up on the idea board for further consideration.

I had thought about an on/off toggle switch instead of a volume knob, though.

This is the bass that prompted my curiosity. These pickup sizes, are, uh, weird.

There's a sentimental value to this bass, so I won't just replace it. But I also don't mind altering it. Besides, whatever I do to it will be cheaper than finding another 35" 4-string!

See below my old Nathan East bass - I replaced the stock pickups (same size as yours) with EMG45JX - they are a bit shorter but when properly centered in the cavity the gaps on each side don't look bad at all IMO:

*DROOL*

That looks pretty good! The routs on mine are just shy of 1.5" so I was assuming the EMG standard size wouldn't fit. How wide were the routs on yours?

If all my stuff weren't packed from moving so many times I probably have a spare DC40 somewhere to try.

Side note: did you swap the preamp with an EMG too? Those look like their knobs.

I did put an EMG preamp in as well yes. The change was a big improvement over the stock Yamaha electronics/pickups.

The cavities were something like 4.7 long by 1.5-sh wide - no longer have the bass but the 45JX (which are 4.5 long by 1.5 wide) fit without issue.

I wanted to update this thread so y'all know how it turned out and in case anyone else decides to attempt something similar with a Yamaha TRBX1004.

The electronics were updated to a Nordstrand 2b preamp. It came pre-wired with a stacked bass/treble, but I broke them onto their own pots so that all 5 holes in the front of the bass were filled (volume (p/p active/passive), blend, bass, treble, tone). I was originally attmpting to install a Glockenklang preamp but the pots that were installed on it were the wrong size for the holes. The cavity on this bass is routed out, then there is a recess for each of the pots to sit in. The pots on the Glockenklang were too broad to sit in the recesses and when it was sitting on top of the recess, the shafts were too short to attach to the front of the instrument. The pots on the Nordstrand worked better for this, but the volume pot gave me some problems and I still don't think the shaft is straight. If I were doing this again I would order different pots with longer shafts (Gibson-style?).

You can reuse the battery compartment but the hard plastic-type of clips barely fit. You will likely need to reuse the output jack as well; none of the others I tried were going to work.

The pickups fit better than expected. I bought some of the pickup mounting foam from BBG and cut strips to the width of the pickup routs, then attached them to the back of the pickup. I also stuck a piece on each end of the pickups (you can see these in the pictures). All the foam helped center the pickups in the routs. Unfortunately the bridge pickup still didn't mount quite straight, but it's good enough for my purposes (I'll be surprised if this instrument ever sees a stage again). I did need longer pickups screws (1.5") for these BC-size pickups versus the screws that were installed. The pickups wound up looking better than I expected them too and, with all the foam I used to install them, are surprisingly solid in place.

Was it worth it? Maybe. The original pickups weren't bad, but the original preamp was terrible. I learned a lot along the way. One of the major advantages of buying American (or probably European as well) made instruments is that things tend to conform to certain standards that we all know and understand. So the problem with updating one of these Korean made instruments is that pieces don't necessarily conform to standard sizes (like pickups in J, EMG 35, or BC sizes, or the control cavity recesses), which is too bad because the rest of the instrument is fine! It plays nice, stays in tune, and sounds pretty good! But trying to push it to the next level took some patience and creativity.

I'll be doing similar operations to two more basses in the coming days: a Schecter Omen-8 which I assume I'll have similar issues with (installing BC-sized Nordstrand Big Blades into different, non-standards pickup routs, plus updating the preamp (the plan is a Microtubes Tone Capsule, but we'll see if it works (if not I'll use the Glockenklang that didn't get used in the Yamaha (sorry for the embedded parenthesis (not too sorry, I dig avant-garde sentence structure (and I'm not working right now so I don't get to unleash this kind of madness on coworkers)))))), and a G.Gould that currently has EMG 40s and an EMG preamp. I assume the G.Gould will be much easier to modify than the Schecter, but I'm glad I got the practice on the Yamaha.

I'll try uploading the pictures again:
