Noob here! Squire, Geddy, etc

I am a masochist so I use stainless. But strings are a bit of a rabbit hole here :)
Right on.. sounds like the rotos are really popular though and I know strings CAN sound different. Ive almost always bought roundwound nickel, by different companies, although I have tried stainless. Usually I'm just wanting the tone to stay bright as long as possible.. I think the best for that were the Ernie's, but I'll give those rotos a shot!
I didn't notice anything necessarily being rougher on the fingers, but whada I know.. ;)

I've played nothing but Rotos on my Ricks for the last 26 years. I have permanent grooves on my left hand fingers...lol! I'm switching one of my Ricks to flats (Rotos again), so that may help.
As to Nickel or Stainless, here's a Bass Strings 101 Invalid Link Removed from Bass Strings Online.
. Thanks for the link Neal! I've always been curious about those half rounds, but I'm always worried about keeping it bright. However, I did notice the pressure wound... That looks interesting. Anyone ever try them?

From what I've researched, they are the go-to for Fender basses... as soon as I find an hour out of the day to put them on and check my setup, I'll let you know... I think there is a little bit of life in the ones I have on mine, though...

... man, I can rationalize laziness in a heartbeat.

You wanna talk about bass? You've come to the right place.
We do occasionally get a guitarist or drummer posting on TalkBass.
I have little interest in what type of snare/cymbal you use or what is the best guitar a 6 or 7 string is for metal.
Conversely, a drummer or guitar website has little interest in the finer nuances of bass playing.

Just a heads up about TalkBass.
Here's some topics that will never get resolved and will routinely pop up;
All band problems are solved by firing the drummer
The best bass ever made is arguably a Fender Precision
The best bass amp is arguably an Ampeg SVT with a cabinet the size of a refrigerator
The best bass for metal is...yet to be agreed on.
Jaco and Jamerson are legend
All debates about 4 string vs 5 string bass will eventually conclude with, Jaco only needed 4 strings.
What's better? Flats or round wounds...3,682 pages of posts later there is still no consensus.
Pick or fingers, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't
Any list naming the top 10 bass players will be condemned for not including player X or Player Y or Player Z should not be on the list at all.

Welcome!

Also, the correct answer to any poll is "carrots." If "carrots" does not appear as an option, the poll is invalid.
