[Noob Q]Setting up a Pedal Board

Ok.

I'm a noob. Not to playing bass, just to this. I'm slightly embarrassed asking this question seeing how I've been playing bass a while and just realized I should probably set up a GOOD board for playing small gigs and such.

What I'm basically asking, is what do I absolutely need in my Pedal Board, not effects, but things that will help me get the tone I want.

This is what I've heard I need so far:

• Compressor
• Some form of EQ Pedal

I've also heard that I should, but don't have to get these:

• Limited Enhancer
• Compression Sustain

The tone I'm looking for is a clean, clear, funky tone. Good for slap & playing alike.

Is there ANYTHING else that I SHOULD have in order for me to get the right tone?

Kyle, what are you using right now for a rig? Are you happy with it? Do you have a tuner? Direct box? If you have all of that, you are basically set and do not NEED a pedal board for ANYTHING related to gigging. Pedals are a great way to add something extra to your tone that your playing styles and gear do not already give you. A well setup bass and good sounding rig are all you need.

Jump on youtube and company websites to see demos of pedals. You can figure out right away what you really WANT to achieve tone wise. You do not NEED effects to sound good.

The rig I'm using right now is a an oldish used Ampeg B2RE-like head with a Ampeg 1x15 cab. I've got a couple smaller cabs that I switch on occasion but right now I've been using that combo for a while. I'm kinda happy with it, I mean it works great. Like I said before it's not top-notch.

I do indeed have a Boss Chromatic Tuner Pedal. That's obviously something I was going to incorporate into my pedal board.

And (also slightly embarrassed saying this) I've heard of a direct box before but I don't have one.

Like you said pedals add something extra to my tone and that's basically what I want. I just want to get the necessities down before I do that.

Here is a link that has all kinds of information about compressors. There is a FAQ link on the top of the page. This will help you out quite a bit as there are many different types of compressors and most of them work on a pretty subtle level.

Enhancers are usually glorified EQ settings.

I don't think you need any of it. If there is something in your rig that needs addressed that you can describe, then we can help you out.

Generally if you are looking for something because someone told you you need one, you don't. IMO.

A quick question:

I'm planning on buying the EBS Multicomp. What is the difference between that and the Boss Compression Sustain or the Boss Limiter Enhancer. Will it give me a better tone if I run all 3 or is it strictly for running them individually?
