noob sight reading question

I just started the Ron Velosky book. I decided I'm gonna get this whole sight reading thing nailed down. Right now, I'm reviewing quarter and eight notes in C Major.

My dumb question for the day is, I've got three quarter notes followed by two eighth notes in a measure, 4/4 time.

Do I count it 1,2,3,&4 or 1,2,3,4&? I think it's the former, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks so much!

That looks like a cool book I think I'll get hold of it.

If you want, check out 'Encyclopaedia of reading rhythms' also. It's got great counting and playing exercises. You can do it away from the bass, so you get a chance to focus on rhythm separately. I've found this has really helped me.

You're trying to get reading down, sight reading is where they drop the music in front of you that you've never seen and you deliver a performance.

General Rule of Thumb: When counting, the number ALWAYS lands ON the Beat.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + with 8th Notes

1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a with 16th notes.

Most helpful! Thanks!

Yes, I know but you have to crawl before you can walk, right? The book is supposed to be designed to train in the ability to sight read. I'm just starting give me a chance! :p
