hey you could consider me a recording noob, i know nothing. I have some general knowlege but im no dr dre. I was wondering, what would be the best way to record my bass playing onto a laptop? should I mic up my amp (gallien krueger 2001... reall big and powerful lol) or buy some program and use a DI. I kinda dont wanna spend like 10K buying a whole studio lol. I just do it for personal use. Also, i know this is a bass forum, hence "talkbass" but i was wondering if anyone out there could give an insight on guitar as well. I have an orange tiny terror guitar amp, and i hear its really good for recording, i just dont know the best way to lol.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE SOOOO VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!! FEEL FREE TO INCLUDE ANY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE WITH GEAR YOU HAVE USED!!!! THANK YOU!!!! :bassist:

If you have a mac, couldn't you just record into Garageband? Any cheap interface would work. I think you could get $99 bass interface from IK multimedia or some such.
I would suggest getting a Pro Tools Mbox2 for better results and the ability to record using a mic but the garageband idea would do the basics.

so far, I really like it. For noobs like us (I've never recorded before either, either than fiddling with audacity), it does everything we need it to without being as insanely complicated as professional recording studios are, not to mention the recordings still sound good.

if you're gonna mess with digital instruments at all (like keyboard patches and stuff that comes with Protools), you're going to need a MIDI controller. I just picked one up off Sweetwater for 70 bucks, should get here in a week.

with this in mind, take my advice with a grain of salt, as I'm completely new to recording as well. I'm sure there are plenty of old pros who will point you in a different direction.
