Nordstrand NJ4SE

Thanks for the advice~it's cool!!:bassist:

I think i will decide my choice between SV or the SE

but I still want more opinions

my Fender custom classic jazz is Alder body with maple neck and fingerboard

I want a bit more like musicman's sound for slap and punk, but still keep the vitage and strong bottom

so SV or SE will be more suitable for me?

It would seem that the difference between the two is going to be subtle. But probably the SVs would be the better choice...

Musicman basses are going to be hard to get the tone from with a Jazz type instrument.

That said, both of these pickups share something in common with the MM. The NJ4SE's will bring out the bark, the NJ4SV's will bring out the bite. Its kind of a toss up. Remember that the musicman has a 3 band preamp designed for its pickups, so your results may vary. I would find the NJ4SE's to sound more like the MM pickups as far as overall tone (without any EQ used).

But the NJ4SV's will have a nice singing treble punch.

Either way, you have a jazz bass. Expect it to sound like a jazz bass.

thanks again and again!!:smug:

I am a new hand of chosing pups....so I need plenty of information and opinion

one more question I want to ask is that if I change my "noiseless" to SV, the SV can still connect with the original preamp ( my bass won't become passive when I changed my pups)??

funny, i have the exact same bass as you (fender custom classic) and I've been looking at the same pups.

the tone I'm going for is full but tight low end, clear midrange with a good clear growl & mellow (not harsh) but clear highs.

I'm thinking the standard np4's might be the way to go here.

I've also considered swapping the electronics (even going passive), but people keep telling me not to....

can you explain what you mean? I don't quite understand....

I assume he just means in terms of the amount of control available on your bass. Basically, on a passive bass, you get volume, a way to blend the pickups (either second volume, or a blend pot) and a treble roll off. There are plenty of great sounding passive basses, but there isn't the kind of tonal flexibility.

FWIW, I've played plenty of active basses that didn't have any flexibility either because they didn't sound good except set one or two ways.

OTOH, The audere pres have a ton of good tones in them.

I have the NJ4SEs in my graphite neck fretted Jazz, togtether with a J-Retro pre. Awesome tone and very, very versatile. I have some NJ4SVs to go in my Geddy Jazz, but haven't got round to doing the work yet. This is going to stya passive, but I'm inlcuding the series/parallel wiring switch. That should be very interesting to play with.

For my fretless, though, I'm still using the EMG J-set. Cannot be beaten for clarity and that's what I personally look for in a fretless tone. But that's just me.

I have a few sound clips of the NJ4SEs and the fretless and will post them again if anybody hasn't discovered them yet. :D
