Went back in my notes and found a mention that Fender headstocks pre '63 were noticeably thinner. So in '63, Fender started making the headstocks thicker in an effort to counter "banana headstocks".
This doesn't apply to the OP's bass, being it's a '70's model. Just thought it was interesting.
