I think this is pretty typical for a band with a certain standard to maintain and a number of candidates to hear. Every band has a different approach. As you'll read on other TB threads, some bands just need a warm body with a bass because they don't think the instrument is all that important, so they would be less likely to stretch things out.
Even if the first candidate we hear absolutely nails it, we always follow through with other candidates who have expressed interest and shown promise. You never really know until you get together and test the chemistry.
