Responded to a local CL post today for projects in my wheelhouse. (Same BL, same rhythm section.) Got back a document of requirements. Here's but a couple of lines from a full page:

No full-time players. To [sic] much hustle*. PT players are easiest and the best.
...
No 6-10 string bass. 4 is it.

Many want to play in these projects. Sorry if it sounds harsh up front , but we been through all kinds of drama and will not tolerate high school BS. We have vocalists/guitar player/ piano ... .

They have keys - no word on whether they're allowed 88 keys even though the repertoire arguably requires 73 at most...

There are other bits about politics - only one viewpoint is tolerated. Pretty sure I can't play in a band where you can't leave politics at the door and just play music. I don't even care if the other players are "like-minded" -- if I want politics (rarely...) I'll go hang out on FaceBook. Band time is for music (IMO).

So the BL has had issues with players' inability to act like professionals - while excluding professionals. Not a good fit for me...

Well, to be fair nothing wrong with stating exactly what you want and he's right about the full time players..I work with a couple of people like that and it's a hassle trying to work around their schedule.

The politics thing is messed up.

I learned a long time ago not to try to push a round peg into a square hole. If it feels good is usually is good and trust your gut.
I got out of a bad tryout last year when I didn’t trust my gut. It was bad and thankfully I just gave out the vibe this is not going to work, packed up and left.

So, he's closed minded. You want to to work with someone like that? No?

This is good - he saved you time and aggravation.

i work with a lot of people in my music gigs. I don't run into stuff like this - there are plenty of reasonably normal, functioning folks out there.

Next.

Politics are a weird thing. I have my views, and I don't care what yours are, but I do very much care if yours are different from mine AND you can't stop yakking about it and insulting me all the while during rehearsals or breaks.

This has happened to me on two occasions with bands I was about to join, so yes, unfortunately I do like to see some indication of where people stand these days. Like I said, I don't care on a personal level, but it seems in this day and age people can't manage to keep their mouths shut about politics and just play music.

That said, there was one guy I had a weekly jam with who was on the opposite end of things, and we got along great. No one ever talked about politics, so it was fine. But you don't know if you'll get lucky that way. It's sad that it's come to the point where people feel they have to ask, but there's probably a good reason they do.

Yup, I don't want politics mixed up in my band situation - at rehearsal or gigs - and anyone that makes that some sort of litmus test? These are the bloviating douchebags always best left behind.

Heck I don't even want to HEAR bands that spout politics. Some years back, I went to see, for the first time, a very popular band in the area. Yes, there were very very good. but the LS was making little political messages in between songs. What a turn-off. Wife and I said we will never go see this band again and we never have.
