Not exactly WBO 24 sorry. Another wacky build

This weekend I started another build in the backwards offset v series. And thinking about it just this second I realize I’ve not followed my plan. Well, there must be a good reason that I’m doing random things, I’m sure. It probably didn’t fit something.

And I’m totally following the advice that I’m getting here! You see how it comes to a point at the back unlike the last one? Right. But it should have three points because of the balance. Drat. Well, now I’m going to have to make another one. I should take notes on this stuff so that I remember why design decisions existed.

But, ooh… A good friend’s neighbor who was a luthier passed away and his spouse would like “all of his wood” to go to someone who wants it and will make good use of it. Clearly I can’t make good use of it but equally clearly I do want it…

Anyway, here’s the start of my latest build which is another reverse etc, etc. It would
be part of the build off but I can’t follow directions and I don’t want to be DFL in this race so I’m not in the thing. I’ll let people who make beautiful instruments be in it! I just want one better than my last one! So, actually, ha ha, so even though I won’t follow the directions (can’t!) if I’m allowed an entry it would be “best bass for being better than the last one I made”. Which doesn’t say a whole lot but the last one had great balance and was really easy to play.

I’m sure I asked last time but how well does that bridge work? Also, I’ve only ever seen pictures of them. If you remember could you show us the process of stringing one up? Thanks.

I’ll show stringing but it’s easy. I didn’t have the neck straight on the first one but it felt simple to install, setup and use. The little winder wrench is cute for sure but only really needed for winding. I hope to do a proper job milling the neck pocket tomorrow…

I’m calling the parts, from left to right, wheel, spindle, adjustment.

The spindles have little holes in the middle and you turn the wheels to turn those. There’s a tiny wrench that sits in a magnetic pocket that you can stick in the hex slot on the top of the wheel to get a tiny bit more leverage - it’s handy for winding but not helpful after that AFAICT.
The bridge adjustment up and down and back and forth seems ok.

The ball of the string is captive in the nut. That feels a little cheesy as the slots aren’t quite wide enough for the strings so I have that set further up the neck than where it should go and I have the strings going through it and then a normal nut in the proper location. I might just drill through the tiny bit of head left and have the balls captive in ferrules. I can see some advantages to that but I don’t know if I have enough material to work with.
