Not impressed with Aguilar!?

Well, I'm not calling Aggie crappy in any way. I'm just somewhat confused that after all this good stuff I've heard about Aggie, and heard on recordings, I couldn't figure out how to dial in a good tone. Frankly, I'm very happy with my GK, but the Aggie was already plugged in and ready to go, so I opted to try it.

Maybe I got a bad apple, or some other circumstances, but I'm pretty sure I could've gotten a good tone out of it if I'd given it a chance. However, I'm happy with the GK I own, so I tried out basses with gear similar to what I own.

I had a great Aguilar experience last Friday. I wen't into the Aguilar shop to chat a bit with the guys. David Boonshoft gave us the full tour and I have to say that I was completely blown away by the effort and attention to detail put into their gear. They have a pretty amazing manufacturing facility. I think the thing that impressed me most was the amount of effort that they put into the testing process. When your amp leaves that shop, it's going to work exactly as it was designed to.

Those guys really live and breathe their products. That, to me, is inspiring in and of itself.

yea, i had the same great experience when i went in to have my DB359 rejigged to 2 ohms. geoff, dave, et all were awesome to chat with, and heck, even got one of the last 4 rack gig bags!

Which series cabs did you play through? S or GS? That may have something to do with it. I dunno. I haven't actually played the AG500 yet. :hiding: . All that I can say about Aguilar is that I have never owned anything of theirs that I didn't absolutely love. Then again, I've gone back and forth in my mind quite a bit on some of it. The first time I played through a DB750, I absolutely loved it. The second time, I despised it. Why? I don't know. It could have been because, at that time, I owned my 359. I'm pretty much just blabbing right now. Sorry.

I just want to jump in here quick. It's also pure preference. GK makes a phenominal product. I absolutely LOVED my old 400RBIII. It's one of the best heads I've ever owned. It was durable, easy to get a good sound out of, lightweight, puncy, etc. Again, I haven't actually played the AG500, so I can't vouch for it in any way; but I know Aguilar makes a good product. As does GK. Plus, the AG500 is a new product which has only been on the market for a little while (I want to say about 6 months, but I know that's wrong). There could be a few kinks yet to work out, who knows? Ah.


EDIT: Did I mention that it's PURE PREFERENCE? I mean, one man's Phil Jones is another man's Behringer and vice versa.

I know you already quoted him once but go back and read the first post. I don't see how anyone could come away from that thinking he said any more than his experience with one amp was underwhelming and asked if it was the norm. At no point did I see him saying anything about the company as a whole. Where did you see it?

Just curious.

Anyway... maybe if was a defective amp... or cab(s)... maybe a lot of things could've affected what he experienced.

Y'know, I've played through many GKs, perhaps dozens of times, and I have never gotten a sound out of any of them that I would even consider passable.

Yet I've heard plenty of pros making great music from GK stuff. What gives? I think that it's just not for me. That's all. My axe, my style, my expectations, whatever.

Same could be said for Aguilar or any other amp company. I think one needs to spend some time and effort to really assess whether there's a fit. If not, move on. But let's be fair. Aggie makes a super quality line of products. And many, many pros seem to agree -- cause you see it on a lot of bandstands.

Give each piece a chance.

I have no idea what cabs I used, they were Aggies though.

I know what you mean, to each his own, I'm saying it's probably not for me, but I didn't expect what I heard. I'm both saddened and delighted (because I don't have to spend THAT much to get a sound I love) and frankly, I couldn't give a hoot. Just surprised, that's all.

hey, it's not surprising. we all like different stuff. it's all about ice cream anyway. some of us like vanilla, some like rocky road. who's to tell me that i shouldn't like ben and jerry's chubby hubby because they don't like it? Likewise, who can assume to tell me i'm crazy because i don't like strawberry and it's their favorite flavor?

One thing I think we can all agree on is that frozen yogurt just plain sounds cheap, too thin, no body, no buttery goodness..... :D
