Not loving my Aggies. Looking for alternatives...

Hi All I put a set of 5j-70'S in my American deluxe jazz and not really feeling it. I went through a few different sets,types,gauges of strings and I'm not too impressed. I actually liked the N3's but they were terribly noisy. These Aggies sound good but they're a little too polite. Not enough bark from the bridge pickup and not enough "chime" in middle position. Looking for alternatives that will drop in. Single coil preferred. Thanks!,

The set in my Monarch 5 Deluxe sound like your wish list. I am 99% sure that they are Fender sized.

For an audio example, this is a long shot since our basses are so different (mahogany body vs. I assume alder or ash; and my bass is passive with 60s spacing). But I promise you that 4 strings or 5, the Klein Epic 1962 Jazz Bass pickups will at least work well for you:

Dimarzios aren’t drop-in replacements for Fender 5-strings.

Delano. Those big poles will give you some bark. ...and they are split-coil, so no 60 Hz hum. Available in Am Std 18 mm spacings.

Thanks everyone for the comments. After a little more time with these, I'm really starting to like them. First off, I changed out the preamp as well and I think I just had too much "change" going on at once. After messing with height adjustments, these things really opened up. Once I lowered them (significantly) they sounded like totally different pickups.. Thanks

Trying to decide between the Aggie 5J-70, 5J-HC, or Bartolini 59CBJD pickups. I play mainly R&B, Pop, and Funk.

I need a fat bottom end with enough top end for slap, but not too much, because my Fender Marcus 5 is crazy bright.

Looking for a tighter, more defined focused sound. The original pickups sounds mushy on the low end (especially that B string), and thin, harsh sounding on top. Also, thinking of swapping out the preamp and installing an Aggie Obp-2.

Presently using DR Fatbeams/Lowrider strings.

Anyone compared these pickups? Thanks!

No experience with direct comparison however AngelDust Guitars has a video of a Marcus Miller 5 with the Aggie HC's. To my ear the HC's sound very similar to the 70's single coils. Mayones guitars loads many of their builds with the 70's windings and there are several vids on youtube for good reference. Personally as I've am further into the honeymoon with my 5j-70's, I'm really happy. I have the Audere 4-band (non-Z) which is great but in hindsight, I probably would have liked the 3-band better with the 500k cut/boost vs 250/750 cut/boost. Good luck!
