Double Bass Notable Double Bassists in California?

Marshall Hawkins (Idyllwild), Bill Saitta (Palm Springs), Gunnar Biggs, Bob Magnusson, Jeremy Kurtz, Mark Dresser, Rob Thorsen, and Bertram Turetzky (all of San Diego), Henry Franklin (Riverside), and Andres Martin (Baja California).

All but Franklin and Saitta played at the 3rd Annual San Diego Bass Summit at Dizzy's in San Diego on Sunday night, July 25, 2010, and Hawkins, Saitta, Magnusson, and Franklin will be playing at the 17th Annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines Festival in Idyllwild on this coming weekend, August 28 and 29, 2010.

Yes, I've worked with him before. Although I thought he was excessively harsh and his criticism lacked constructiveness :/ I was never able to play well in front of him, which is very strange. I guess we weren't a good fit? It's a shame cause he seems qualified, but it didn't seem to work out. I could try a masterclass with him though...

I met a young man named David Moore at a concert earlier in the year-LA I think is was.

ANYHOO....

I bugged him to play a little Beethoven (it was backstage) he played that trio with the fastest, cleanest spiccato I'd ever heard come out of a German bow.

If I were 50 years younger, I'd study with him.

In Northern California there is Stan Poplin. He does it all including symphonic, jazz & blues, etc. He has played with Robin Ford and has accompanied many jazz greats when in the area and also plays with the Monterey Symphony.
