Double Bass Notation help

Sorry if this is a repeat question but I couldn't find an answer here or in wikipedia. I am using the parts from the NY Philharmonic's archives to play the Messiah better. In reading one of the parts, there was added notation that I haven't seen before. Can someone explain? It is a circle with a cross. I have attached an example.

I suspect that sign means something to the person who wrote it on the music but little to most anyone else.

If you look at the score, there is singing where there are brackets, so I suspect the symbol thingy shows where the basses should play, because of course, there's no way they can play softly enough with the cellos to hear the singers.

Yes, in a Chorus (full choir) it might be an indication to play tutti basses at the crosses 9forte sections) and drop out to leave only the tutti cellos during the brackets (piano sections). In an aria perhaps cello only then cello plus bass. The symbols you ask about could mean transferring markings across from another edition or complying with a particular conductor's wishes. Quite often it is common stylistically when you see sections marked piano alternating with sections marked forte. Some editions give you more help.

I'm not a fan of the editions that have the basses drop out every time someone sings. It sounds awkward and contrived. In the original, there are just a few places where Handel indicates cello only.

Thank you all for your comments. I am relieved to know that I am not missing some basic notation. I am a bit surprised that the NY Phil site would have a part that is so "messy". The other parts I have viewed on the site have been very clean, only showing exceptions with standard notation...mostly bowings.
I am now playing in an orchestra where the basses are being asked to make up for the lack of cellos. So each bass has specific, unique parts. I am finding it very confusing...hence the search for more information. I think it is time to find a new orchestra (smile).

Wow. My orchestra has four cellos and one bassist (me). I don't think I'd like to fill in for cellos... don't think I'm up to it, for that matter.
