Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

Thanks! Everyone there could not get over the sound being so full and round. Over and over I got complimented on the sound. Very "upright-like", which is the expected sound in this music. In fact, I've never heard a negative comment at all. Even traditionalists who expect the visual of the upright (which I also play regularly) are quite pleased with the sound, and all have said the appearance, while not traditional, is quite pleasing. I've also played it in church with a more "modern" sound, and it was a huge hit. I love the NXT's sound and versatility.

I have read most of the posts in this thread and I think I haven't heard anyone mention how their jazz duo, trio, or quartet have sounded with the NXT...

Has anyone brought their NXT to a practice or a gig and have their piano player lean over and say..."Don't do that again!" or anything like that?

I brought my URB to a Big Band gig a few years ago and the feedback was horrendous...my drummer leaned back and said," Get your electric bass back out!"...

You go on youtube and see Chris Minh Doky and Marc Johnson playing their Eminence and Yamaha Silent basses on the big stage, sounding pertty darn good....I went to Italmelodie YET AGAIN this morning and althought the NS Design NXT at $1300 sounds darn good, it seems to lack the natural percussive ring of the big-bodied DB. The question is, "in the mix", in a bar full of people, with an amplified guitar, piano and singer, who can tell the diff? And of course, the "look" of the double bass is a win, except in a small space in a bar there's no room!

And the deep bass notes of the EUB destroy my $3000 plywood bass...you need to spend more $$$ on an upright to get better low notes (E and A strings) than the EUB....

As you can all tell my angst is heightening with that last visit!

I have... It wasn't a jazz gig, but rehearsal in a convention band that plays cocktail music. Normally I do it all on electric bass. What tripped them up was using the NXT set to pizz... They just did not like the sound of the sustained whine the NXT makes in pizz mode.

When I switched to Arco mode and thumped along, it worked well and everyone was fine with it.

Also, the strings that come stock take about 3 months of playing to lose that scratchy whine in pizz mode. I recommend detuning and retuning the bass a few times to let those strings stretch. Of course you could invest in another brand of string when you get it but my budget didn't allow for that at the time.
