Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

Hi Guys,
I am currently using D'Addario orchestra med tension strings on the bass. I also raised the bridge.
I found that during playing pizz with the NXT toggle set to pizz , I don't really need a pre-amp. (I'm plugging in to the high input of a vintage Roland 60 with everything set to mid.)
When I use a preamp with the same setting, I actually feel that my fingers have to work harder. Is this normal?
The preamp that I am using is the DIY one from Francis Deck. The preamp works great but I am starting to find that I can get a nice tone even without it. Perhaps my fingers are getting used to the bass?

I installed the B string yesterday. It bows great! It blends well with the EADG of a medium set of helicore orchestals because that's what this string is according to the silk color and this chart:

Great tone and playing comfort. No effort to pull sound from the bow. At the community orchestra practice yesterday evening it was nice to bow low Ds and C sharps on this Bach concerto.

Love the tone and playability of the NXT5. It's hard to stop playing it...

Any other NXT arco players here?

The NS B string is the B string from the NS610 set.

I had a 5 string set of helicore orchstrals. I made the mistake of bending and cutting the extra lenght at the tip; something I'm used to doing on electric basses. :scowl:

I'm glad I took a good look at the B string of NS610 set this time. Turn out the tip is narrower and this is what allows the string to be threaded into the tuning peg.

The string is really big and fits really snug into the hole at the bottom of the NXT5. So I'm still kind of worried about other slightly bigger B strings I might want to try in the future. For example, Obligatos. The B string alone is 110$!

Was it the NS B string?

Does anyone have experience with NS Electric Traditional NS610 strings? I like the idea that I don't have to wrap them around the back of my NXT (thus avoiding damage to the wood), but I wonder how their bowed response is?

I've had my NXT since October and only recently came into the funds to restring it. The stock strings are very harsh and unmusical in my opinion.

Forgive me if I posted this in the wrong location, I just thought that since this question about strings was EUB specific, that I would post it here.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Very happy. Just look a few posts back here...

The NS610 literally are helicore orchestrals medium. The silk is even the same color. The bowed response is very good IMHO. I found they took from 1 to 3 week to get even faster bow response.

Another thing, I advise against atempting them with the stock tuners. The tension might kill them. I strongly suggest hipshot ultralites.

A good bow, just a touch of carlsson rosin and you can play with a light touch. Even the low B is a dream playing.

I've noticed that the stock strings on the bass have a very similar (if not identical) wrap to D'Addario Helicore orchestra strings. Just to clarify, the NS610's are not the stock string shipped on all NXT's right?

I play the NS610 w/ an added low B. They are much different than the stock strings. Much more like DB with the 610's. Our audience and musicians who see us are amazed that it isn't a DB.

I'll also say that stock tuners might need to be replaced. I blew the B tuner with the NS B string - more tension, but a huge sound. I put on a set of Hipshot Ultralights, and the NXT kicks serious butt. Stay solidly in tune. Wouldn't change a thing.

Do you have a recording of any sort by chance?

I'v uploaded some sound clips. They were taken straight out of my line6 backtrack. There is some clipping on louder B string notes due to an improper setting of my part on my preamp. Sorry for this.

My strings are d'addario orchestrals for EADG and the B is a ns610. They are the same strings, silk color and all; just different lenghts.

Hi guys,

I'm seriously considering getting one of these NXTs, and I hope to use my standard tuning, CGDA, on it. I've been playing in this tuning since 1998, I know where my notes are, and I'm not planning on changing back to EADG for upright use. I know that there are several prominent upright players who use this tuning, and I know that Thomastik makes a CGDA set. My question is: Will these fit on an NXT? Will any modifications be necessary? Thoughts?

Maybe the low C would be too wide for the E string groove at the nut?
Besides that, I don't foresee any issue.
