Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

Hi Herman,
Does your NXT come with the JackPot?
Mines the old one that doesn't have it.

Amps - I'm currently using the old Roland Cube 60. Input jack at high.
Settings
Volume = mid
Bass = 1
Frequency = 4~5
Level = -1
Treble = 0

Setting on the NXT
Volume = mid
Tone = mid
Arco mode

I'm going for a more acoustic sound & prefer the arco sound when you pizz as it's closer. The pizz mode is great as well but I don't use it much.

Here's a clip of what I sound like, I've a small solo about 4.40 into the video.
Chitlins con Carne - The Chicago Jazz Quartet +1 Live At China House - YouTube

I was playing plugged directly into the mixer, no preamp.

Dbassnut, thanks for posting the video. It's clear that with a full band, in a noisy room, the NXT is at least as good, if not better than a URB. Your sound is big and holds its own with the drums. And it doesn't sound Bass Guitar-ish.

Hard to find videos online of the NXT at work in real world situations. There are no shortage of bad solo players sliding up and down the scale, but apart from a few TalkBassers, that's it. So it's nice to find your youtube site. BTW my wife is a DressagePerson too!

Now you see music is better than horses because if you gig, the earnings pay for your gear. Horses are just really expensive!

I'll be seeing my new NXT tonight.

Of course I ordered from Golihur Music. They shipped it super fast on Wednesday morning,
It's my first time ordering from the boys, although I've known about them for over ten years. Nice to finally be able to do business with them!

Hi Stew, Do post a photo or video of your NXT once you get it. It took me about a week of playing to get used to mine but now I'm comfortable with it. I find the G string a little soft in volume compared to the other strings but am not sure if its due to the instrument or the string. I re-strung my NXT with D'Addario Helicores Orchestra meds.

Here we go. The neck is really nice, no different than my URB. Well a touch wider, but I think the ES-1 neck is in fact narrower. I'll post impressions later, so far I really like it.

I was a little worried when my bass showed up. Didn't sound anywhere close to what I imagined it should. However, yesterday I strung it up with Helicore light hypbrids. Interesting enough, several shops told me that it would not make a difference. It made a huge difference!!! This bass rocks. While it's not entirely an acoustic sounding instrument, it works just fine for bluegrass.

So I played about an hour with my jazz pianist mom. I need to get used to the lighter touch necessary to make a sound on these light strings. I was playing through my mom's little portable PA thingie, and the sound was fine.

For some reason my Fishman EQ wasn't working (need a battery I think). I look forward to getting home tomorrow night and blasting this baby first through my Phil Jones Flightcase and/or my GK RB800 head and Hartke 410 bottom.

The setup was pretty much perfect for me, as it arrived from Golihur Music. It needed a tad bit of tuning, that is all.

What is cool about this EUB concept.

1) Portability. Wow, what a difference. It's as easy or easier to carry than an electric bass even.
2) Space. It hardly takes up any. I have had to squeeze in to so many places with my URB and leave the gig needing traction from having to wrap myself around the thing.
3) Ergonomics-once you get the instrument on its tripod, and set the angles right and the height right, it STAYS THAT WAY. And then I can focus on playing.
4)Neck and fretboard: It's fat like my URB and real ebony. So nice to play, and my right hand is now officially used to the slight change in position. Didn't take long.
5)Sound: For the most part it sounds great. We'll see when I get home much I can duplicate the real air-moving percussiveness of the URB. Many of you have put heavier strings on to get that, I may go there also.

Now the big test is the 21st, when I jam with my jazz buddies. Sax, trumpet, piano and guitar. After the gasps and disproving looks, I will wow them all with some serious tone.
My endurance will be better too, since I'm not holding Big Bertha up.

Which reminds me. The low bass notes cut really well. Do you guys find that? It's nice to strike the E string and actually be rewarded with Big Notes.

Oh and another thing, the fingered notes sound better than the open strings. Agree? Disagree?

One thing is for sure. I'm glad I learned proper technique on an upright before hitting the EUB. I wouldn't want to play an EUB and think it's an easy move to URB. Upright takes a LOT of work to get tone and endurance and pitch from. Much easier to step down and know what to look for. Opinions?

Lastly, I did not record this afternoon even though I wanted to to. My mum was self-conscious. So I'll have to record our jam the 21st and put some on Soundcloud. Make a note in your Calendars ;-)

Has anyone replaced the rubber feet on the stock stand with something softer / stickier? I've actually gotten used to the little bit of wiggle the stand has, but the feet chattering around is still annoying.

Hi Jason, You may want to check for loose screws on the stand. I had the same rattling problem & found it was due to a screw being loose. Was ok after I tightened it. However, take care not to tighten to much as you don't want to crack the plastic.

Hey all-

I'm using an NXT 4 on the tripod stand with a Fishman Pro-EQ Platinum. I was wondering if there is some kind of attachment for the stand that I can mount my preamp to? Has anyone seen something like this?

Thanks,
Dave

I've put on new NS 610 traditional strings today.
What a difference compared to the stock strings!!!
These sounded more like a fretless bass, now it's closer to an upright.
The sound is awesome now, but the A string sounds more quiet than the other strings.:confused:
Any ideas?
Will it improve after playing a while?
Could it be a bad string?

I only tried it on my computer using a Behringer guitar link.
Tomorrow I will se it on my amp.
Could be the Behringer guitar link of course, although it had no problems with the stock strings....

I don't remember if I mentionned this before but NS610 are the same as helicore orchestals mediums.

On the picture below you can see my ns610 B string on the right and the other 4 strings on the left. The silk is the same and you can look at d'addario's silk color chart here:

Nice to know, considering ns610 are often a bit cheaper than a set of orchestrals.

I've had them for more than a year and they are still great. No issue with any string sounding softer...
