Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

bassyboy said:
I searched high and low for a gig bag, bass central has great ones (Undercover gig bags) that fit NS uprights but none in stock and it seems undercover is out of business, anybody have any info on how to order one, not interested in the flight case or the plastic shell thing from Gollier just a soft gigbag thanks in advance

The Undercover bag is great, I ordered one from Grasshopper at BassCentral and got it within a week. It came straight from them as they were out of the blacks at the time and I didn't want a red one. BC is great to deal with! Lots of protection and room for what ever you want. The stand pocket is a hair tight but the other long pocket has enough room to slip in 2 hard Bow Cases. The small pocket has room for Rosin and tuners and stuff like that. I posted the dimensions here a while back. I usually don't pack cords in the bag, they go in my pedal board even though you throw one in the small pocket if you roll the tight, which I usually do.

I got my CR-4T used and it came in a loose fitting mic stand case that I used twice wrapping the bass in beach towels. That was scary! Had to get a proper case for sure.

It would be a shame if they went out of business. They used to have a website that seemed like it was not finished and I never checked to see if it got completed after my purchase. It did have their number although they never answered the phone directly. I left a message. I believe a woman owns the business and I spoke to her a couple of times getting the direct shipping hooked up. I believe they are in Denver. They do nice work!

I'm shopping for a new combo for my nxt5. I'm looking for a good amount of power with portability and around 600$ price range. I'm considering:
- TC Electronic BG250
- Gallien-Krueger MB210 2x10 500W
- Genz-Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T
I don't play large venues but it would be nice to have something powerfull enough to eventually play with a big band. (brass sections, drummer and percussions, guitar and piano)

Bill: What do you use?

I just received my NXT4, have ordered NS Traditional Strings to replace the stock strings as well as a set of Hipshot Tuners. Having always played UB I am clueless as far as what kind of amp to use. I would love to hear what others are using. I mostly play Pizz and like everyone else I would like for it to sound as close to a UB as possible. All suggestions are appreciated. I do have a Contra Bass Amp that I used on occasion with my UB.

Congratulations! If you have already played UB then give it a few weeks to get used to the setup, traditional strings and the feel of the new instrument in your hands...do you have an amp already? If so wait a bit before you spend money on a new one and get used to the NXT first.

I'm sure you'll love the bass. Several months now I've had mine and I can't believe what an amazing value it is!!

I do have an amp now, it's an Accoustic Image Contra. I am just curious what others are using. Hopefully the string change will be a big improvement. Can't say I care for the stock strings. I do think I'm really going to like this bass once I get it tweaked out some. My UB will be torn down soon for some overhaul, new nut, new bridge, new strings and a refinish. The NXT and I will get plenty of time together during that work.

The Trads are a really big improvement, you'll see. I too, played UB for about 11 years before getting the NXT.

I'm sure the Contra will work great.

I'm using a Phil Jones Flightcase 150. The amp is fine and has been for practice and quiet cocktail gigs. I think for a big room I may have brought a bigger amp but I can't remember.

The good news is that you will mostly always be able to hear yourself, even your low notes....especially your low notes!

Seems like lots of guys here like the Contra. I'm using a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 with lots of tube engaged through an Acme Low B1 (1x10).

I haven't done mine yet but to give some advice ..... I would use a small round very fine tooth file. The object will be to remove a small amount of wood evenly around the interior of the hole. Take your time and do just a little at a time and test fit the new tuners frequently. Also use a light touch on the file, you don't want to tear out the wood on the outside edges of the holes. I have heard that they just about fit without any modification. I'll know for sure in a couple of days when mine arrive.

What's the best way to enlarge the scoll holes to fit the hipshots?

Here's what I did on my WAV4; take all the old ones out, lay a few layers of masking tape across the outside of each hole, then use a stepped drill bit and a power drill to just widen each hole. The masking tape should prevent chipping of the finish, and the stepped drill bit will self-align in the prexisting hole. Just go slow and steady, and it should be no sweat.

Stepped drill bits look like this, and if you have a "Harbor Freight" store in your area, they can be pretty cheap.

Okay, finally got time to install the Hipshot Tuners. I have read some post that said they drop right in, not mine. It was still an easy install though. The holes are tapered and the nut that slides over the tuner post will fit easily in the hole from the outside but due to the taper it will not go in the hole from the correct side. I used a round micro file to open up the inside edge of the hole just enough that I could push the nut into the hole. It took about fifteen minutes total to remove the old tuners and install the new ones. Also installed the NS Traditional Strings. I like it much better now but still may raise the bridge to see what that does.

Hey guys, I'm planning to buy a NXT4 soon, but I will have to travel with it on a plane, is there anyone who managed to bring it on cabin with gig-bag? I've read that some of you tried golf/ski bags for cargo, but I'm kinda short on cash so is there anyway to succeed with given gig bag?
