Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

I'm not quite sure if this is the right place to post, but I bought an NXT few weeks ago. Its nice fro the short money ($1200) I bought a set of Thomastic Spiracores mittle weight, to put on the NXT because I like these strings on my regular bass.
So it was a bear to get those strigns on my NXT and after several days of playing, the E tuner just died. Turn the E key and nothing happens, the gears are stripped inside.
So I called NS, they say they have had some issues and it 'should' have been ok. The tension is only 33kg. They sold me another set of tuners as an upgrade for $30, but they dont quite fit, a new hole needs to be drilled. Also the new tuners can barely allow the 3mm E string.
So rather than do that I think I will buy some Grover Titans, and just do the rework.
Any comments from people experinced with this issue?
Thanks.

This has been something that comes up occasionally on Talkbass - if you look back in this thread (and in the WAV4 thread - they use the same tuners) you'll find others who've upgraded their tuners.

On my WAV4, I replaced the tuners with the 3/8" size Hipshot Ultralites; they also required a slight widening of the hole, but they work quite well. I hadn't had any difficulties with the stock tuners, but since I tend to tweak and modify all my instruments, I did the upgrade proactively.

I got my new NXT5 last week. I am using the stock strings for the time, I will probably go to an Obligato or a TI set when I change strings. I read that the Hipshot Ultralites tuners were the way to go when installing regular UB strings on this bass. Many thanks to Mark and all the fine folks at Gollihur Music for the great customer service they provided me during this purchase.

1st outing with my NXT last night. Set up, Helicore Orchestral med strings, F Deck preamp (DIY), Tone set 3/4 to bass on the NXT & switch in the pizz mode.
You need a preamp for this instrument. Either build one (check out Francis Deck's site, I built mine from his schematics) or buy one.
Comment from one of the audience, the NXT sounds 90% like a double bass so I guess that I'm happy with the sound of it.

I got mine Friday and played it on the job Saturday. It played great. Fishman BII worked fine, but I might like some finer eq-ing. Also a set of Daddario NS Traditionals might help. Gonna see how that works out. I am loathe to change the strings, as I love the sound from the stock strings (just need to mod the tone for what our band does). Either way, I love the instrument. Our fans liked it, and I got lots of positive comments. Plays great!

I really like the D'Addario NS strings on my WAV4. Acoustic bass is my instrument, and I found that other strings I tried on the NS gave it too much sustain for jazz purposes compared to the acoustic.

The exception was Obligatos, which gave a wonderful acoustic sound. But the problem with Obligatos was that I had to cut them to fit, and they quickly started unravelling. Plus they were generally too thick to fit in the holes and slots of the stock tuning pegs.

The D'Addario NS strings are the right size, and they fit in the pegs, so it's a lot less stress. And they sound and feel really good.

Hey All: Need some help with BOWING.

I just got the NXT 4 and love it. However..I'm bowing the G string and wow..sympathetic vibrations all over...Play a high A on the G and the Open and Rings..overtones like crazy.
Now I don't want to be damping with my left hand..I mean..I'm playing a little Bach on this thing. Any suggestions or Am I grabbing my wife's scrunchi and putting it near the nut..

Here is my Facebook. Haven't tried guts yet, and don't have any NXT samples yet, but I have a couple vids on there. Look up Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition on Youtube. A few decent vids (if youtube vids are decent at all). I do not slap with this band, and I'm no Ryan Gould, Mark Rubin, or Kevin Smith, but I try when I can.

The same thing happens on a properly set-up upright bass. It gets magnified when you have an amp behind you sending those vibrations immediately back to the instrument. You may have to do some left hand muting or turn down the low volume and/or low end on your amp.
