It’s an actual (and my first) Fender!
Got this Elite Jazz V for a pretty good price yesterday. Of course after all the basses I’ve had this doesn’t break any new ground for me, and to be honestly I still believe Brubaker’s JXB platform is my favorite in terms of FSOs. But this bass still reeks of professional quality, it may not be the fancy boutique bass, or super modern bass I’m accustomed to, but shoot they’re the gold standard for a reason. And for what I paid for it, I could have done a lot worse than a past flagship American Fender!
Spent a few hours with it last night to get to know it’s ins and outs. Sounds great, as in sounds like a jazz bass I guess haha, no super hot preamp or crazily voiced pickups, cause it’s a fender and it’s supposed to sound like one. Balances nicely, and has a lovely satin finished that feels nice although rounded and fatter than I prefer on a 5 string. It’s a very beautiful bass too, the beautiful ash body speaks for itself and the black pearloid inlays look great on the bound neck.
The thought crossed my mind to possibly mod in the future, but I rejected the idea, it wouldn’t be a true Fender after that, plus if I want a jazz with custom options I’ll just save up for another JXB in the future.
the B string is a let down honestly, a real flubster, but not unusable, just one of the “less nice” B strings in a bass I’ve owned. I’ll mess around with raising the action and stuff to try and get it more tout later. That dinky smith clone next to it has a much nicer B which is kinda funny. I’m considering throwing some flats on it once my Brubaker sixer is finished and makes it home. Anyone know which brands make flats with a nice tight B string?
I’m thinking of making this one a keeper, it’s nice to have the standard for all around basses in the stable. Only possible mods I’d do is changing out the pickguard, and maybe changing out the bridge, anyone have any opinions on how good/bad these bridges on the elite series were? Seems like they changed the bridges for the Ultra series.
