Nuisance background noise in my recordings......

It almost sounds like it's picking up one of the fans in my computer? It is a very consistent humming/whirring noise, that is present in the background of the recording, as well as dominating my monitors playback to the point that I don't even want to listen to it. I have never recorded without this sound.....it's nothing new.

But I'm not sure what to do about it...........I tried moving my firebox further away from the computer, and no dice. I'm about to try Di'ing it and trying to isolate the problem, but in the meantime if anyone knows what is causing this please let me know.

This is unreal.........I plugged it in DI, and BOOM no background hiss, tons of volume.

THEN I plug it back in with my amp and effects in the loop, and NOTHING. No sound comes out of the monitors at all! What the hell?

And it still records, but the sound is TINNY and DISTANT, and even with the volume on the bass cranked I get a VERY low output......yes the volume on my firebox is turned up, and if I plug back in DI i get full sound right away........i have tried just running it straight from the amp to the firebox with an XLR cable, and it still sounds distant........I have the gain on the amp at noon, is this the problem?
