Nut Height Can Be Of Most Importance

Since my first Bass 1957 , ( a shocking 5/4 Mitenwald ) a rich relative left
me , I have never on my later basses had the high strung effects the same.
Seems forgotten a old adadge that 2mm up is for a man training & 3mm up
is for the strong man training. Tired of wondering of the dif (un)-heard I
recently sought a cure. I took a piece of Swedish spring steel , 1.5 mm in
thickness , cut too standard nut dimensions. Took a heated Xacto 1/2"
flat front blade & with 2 taps old nut allowing only a short mm clearance ,
fell into my hand. I quickly put my shim under it & retightened it .
My best dreams are coming true on this. First noted was giving a good
added bell sound to my Shen 88. Next noted this 1.5 mm additive sent the
strings flat to easy use level ! Then noticed while doing this the lower end
of fretboard strings fell near twice the 1.5mm & I raised by bridge a good turn.
Next my old first 10 years feeling of fulfilment in exercising came back ,too me,
very well.
A confession that I always considered a Bass a exersize tool , first &
entertainment second. Low easy too play strings are great for digital dexterity
a important way too developed strength . But I say , high strings sound better
& 1st. in developing strength.
Anyone else try this. Interested in your findings.
