NuX MLD bass preamp questions

Hello, I have a few questions regarding the MLD bass preamp. I want a new bass preamp, and been kinda looking for something different than that of my current sansamp or any “ampeg” flavored preamp for that matter. The NuX looks to offer something different, and it’s not expensive.

I would love a Nordstrand starlifter, but it’s a little bit out of my budget, but has the features that I would love to have, including a modern/vintage switch. Or been waiting for a master effects super 800 (GK RB800) preamp on the classifieds for a while, but they don’t pop up as often. Still a little bit over budget if bought new.

Here are my questions…is the NuX considered a CLEAN preamp, but still with flavor added?

Does it play well with other pedals? (I use 2 od’s as well as some delay/chorus)

Is it being digital, have that fake sounding punch? If you know what I mean…(an example would be a tc electronics spectra drive, which I hated)

Would it be best to save up and wait for any of the 2 other pedals mentioned?

I have one and I think it's very transparent especially in it's stock voicing. It has a tone hammer clone circuit that I really like as well as a Star lifter clone circuit. If you can figure out how to change the voicing it's nice. The di out works well, the cab sims and aux is useful. It's definitely a good little preamp. I also have a TC Spectra drive preamp that I like too. It's got less voicing options but the tone print feature is nice. Lots of options for drive and compression settings. Both have lots of mid frequency control. I'd say that running both of them together has been fun. They can compliment each other well actually. But as far as the nux it should be as close to a Star lifter as you'll get for the price. If you don't like that setting the tone hammer or stock setting should give you something to work with.

After not getting replies…granted, these are not super popular preamps, I decided to buy a used MLD preamp from reverb at a very attractive price.

In short, it is a very nice preamp for the price! The software is easy to use, has decent amount of functionality and the cabsims are very useful, and distinct from one another. I ended up liking the Aguilar TH emulation over the Starlifter, even though the stock NUX one is very nice for slapping. Can’t remember what cabsim I decided on tho.

Couple of weeks went by…boom, a used master effects super 800 preamp gets listed in the classifieds. I got it. Figured I would sell either or later.

The super 800 is basically a Gallien Krueger RB800 preamp in pedal format. It has a really distinct voicing, very contoured (to my ears anyway), and growly. It is still very clean if you want it to be clean. I like it. Still trying out settings, and playing with it.

I now have both of them on my pedalboard

I use the Super 800 for slightly more punch and rock tones and the NuX for slapping, old school music, pop/r&b kinda playing. I get my grit or distortion from a pork & pickle at very low drive setting, and a joyo double thruster for more severe overdrive.

Tone hammer setting is the best by far. I don't really use the cab sims but they aren't bad. I prefer to just blend 2 preamps and it does a great job of acting like a cab sim in terms of voicing my tone how I want. Try the nux and GK together and see what that does. I have a GK Plex that I adored until something shorted out inside and I haven't gotten it fixed yet. I just wonder how the nux tone hammer sound next to a real on.
