UGH!!! The guy just backed out of the deal because it's over an hour drive. Here's a thought, I'll go to him :hyper: I want those Aggies GS112's.

Yeah, probably worth it. Something else - it's extremely hard to find buyers for those kind of Ampegs. Today's players aren't familiar with how great they were and the older players don't wanna haul around the weight. Whereas the GS112's are relatively easy to offload since they're smaller but still sound good.

No problem at all.

With my DB750 I am using a Tung Sol 12AX7 in V1 with JJ 12AX7s in V2 and V3 and a JJ 12AU7 in V4. It sounds fantastic.

Ive yet to re-tube my 750 yet and havent read/heard much about it.

Is there a big difference between each tube slot? How much does each affect the sound? In what ways?

I already bought 3 Tung Sols (12AX7s) and one JJ (12AU7) but I would mind buy a few other and experimenting.

I cant speak from experience, but I think most guys really only notice a difference with replacing the tube in slot V1.

I myself have the 751 and replaced all 3 tubes with old Telefunken's. I'm really glad I made the switch. Before I found the amp a bit too wooly and the low end a little undefined for my tastes.

Ever since switching out the tubes I couldn't be happier.

That's exactly how I would describe the sound I got at my last show.
I opened it up and saw that it had low end Sovteks in it with a no name chinese in the 12AU7 slot.

Hopefully this tightens up the sound and brings the amp back to life.
Ill have to do some experimenting.

I retubed mine because it had tubes in it which were eight years old so I have no real basis for comparison like some of the other guys do.

With any gear I've had which uses tubes, changing them out tends to have the most effect if the existing tubes were older and in need of replacing. Changing out an existing new tube for a similar model from a different manufacturer can change the sound but it's all fairly subtle from what I can tell. Great stuff if you're talking about recording gear and your genre is jazz, not such a big deal if you're talking about stage gear and your genre is metal. I've never plugged into an amp and thought "this amp clearly has Amperex Bugle Boys in the first two slots and a Telefunken in the third slot" even if I had headphones on. It either rocks or it doesn't.

Ultimately I do think the money is best spent on retubing once every year or two rather than worrying too much about endless subtle comparisons.

As far as tube slots, you will get the most benefit from swapping the tube in V1 as both halves of that tube are dedicated to the initial preamp stuff. Half of the V2 tube is for the Deep switch so if you use that, you may see some benefit there. V3 is dedicated to the effects loop so if you're not using that you may never notice the new tube there. V4 is the oddball tube (12AU7) and drives the power section of the amp.

There is a thread devoted specifically to tube swaps in the DB750 that is worth reading through if you're interested in doing this, though you already have replacement tubes so experimenting with it will serve you far better than reading a web board full of opinions on the topic. ;)

Can I join the club....

Been gigging and loving my DB750 upgraded with NOS Telefunkens into GS410 for close to a year now and I ad another GS410 for the big shows...:bassist:
Just picked up an AG500 to use with my GS210 for smaller coffee shop type gigs and it totally kills...:hyper:.
I may swap out the drivers to bring it down to 4 ohm for full output or maybe just toss my GS112 under it...:ninja:

Also have a DB659 with NOS Telefunkens but haven't settled on an amp yet.

I have had offerings from all the major amp and cabs manufacturers and absolutely love my Aguilar stuff the most.

Well, your explanation of what each slot does just made a huge difference hahaha.

Ill check out that thread though, and Ill definitely do some experimentation and see whats up. Nothing too crazy, I dont have tons of money to blow, but at least ill build up enough tubes to be set for a few years.

One question though, do the tubes in each slot have to be matched to each other?

Here's my GS410. Love it attached to my Seymour Duncan Bass 400. Just wish that the horn was fused.

So, I know at some point I will regret selling/trading off all my "stacks." I kept some of my rack gear, so I can remember what it feels like to schlep hundreds of pounds of gear to play a back room in a bar!!

But, this DB112/ DB112NT stack is definitely my new fav...
The Schroeder BMF1210 gets the nod in power, but the Aggie's definitely do the "warm thing" for my passive jazz basses.
Now I just need a 2ohm capable mini-head and I will break the glass out of my basement windows!!!

Sign me up for a number in the Aguilar Club if you would be so kind!!!

I've got something semi-important to discuss with you guys and want some feedback. I'd like to get rid of the numbers system and just go to "Aguilar Club Member". The numbers mean nothing really and it's just one more thing I've got to try to keep track of. What do you all think?

Excellent idea!

Every club I've started has self-service numbers...

I'm cool with this... I'm not "lucky-number-addictive" kind of guy...:D
