I've never been a fan of overdriven or distorted bass sounds. I like a more old school Motown, muted sound. I often roll the tone way off on my P-Bass. When I want a more modern sound, I like the Flea-ish, clear GK thing.
Well, I just got my VT Bass today and I've seen the light! By itself, I don't much care for the overdriven sounds of the VT. To me, it sounds better when set in the Fat Tube/Fliptop vein.
But stack the OCD (v4) into the VT Bass and damn it sounds good!
Try this setting on the VT Bass (season to taste) Mid 1:00, Character 11:00, Drive 10:30, Low 1:00, High 12:30
Now set the OCD with all knobs at around 11:00 (shoot for unity volume). To me, these settings let me toggle between old school thump and grinding rock overdrive, with a tube-like feel. For more over-the-top distortion, just crank up the gain on the OCD.
Best thing about using the OCD with bass is that it actually gets bassier as you crank up the gain.
