Ocean bass?

Ocean basses didn't impress me that much. Playing with it's dials and since i'm a pick player, I wasn't getting a good punch or attack from it. Sounded dull. NOt to say it's a bad thing, it almost had that keyboard kinda sound, very lounge-esque. Just not my kinda bass /devilhorns

Huh? :confused: I never mentioned Rondo or SX in my post at all, and don't recall either even being discussed in this thread...I was talking about Cort being the probable OEM of these Ocean basses from Guitar Center. Now that bridxofxprey mentioned it, the ones I played were indeed Indoensian...Cort has a large factory in Sarabaya that churns out mostly lower-priced instruments (though often with excellent quality, my Ibanez SA120 guitar came from there.) I'll have to play some others as they filter in, see how variable they are. They're nicely put-together, for sure. :bassist:

Just bought the 4 string at GC a couple weeks ago. A little wheelin-dealin got it for $700. IMHO, there is not a better sounding mid-priced bass out there. It has a nice wide range of tone. Love the grand-piano "bang" it can put out. Actually it sounds better to me than many priced $1200 and above. Personally, I don't care if it's named "Billy Bob's" bass - it's all about the sound and playability...

I found 2 at GC yesterday and gave em a whirl. They're definately offshoots of the Cort Artisan series. Every bit as responsive and ergonomic, I was very very impressed. It's like a Cort Artisan and an Ibanez BTB had a child that weighed less then either.

I was almost considering buying one, but it would be slightly redundant as I have a Cort A5 already.

I liked what I played, though! Very nice basses.

For some reason, these basses keep getting compared to Warwick. My roommate just bought one as a REPLACEMENT for his Warwick. the neck profile is extremely comfy, and the cutaway is very accessible. Neck joint is not restricting at all, which is great for me. I'm not a huge fan of the sound, but I'm a Ken Smith boy, and so my opinion is unique. I don't particularly like the upper bout, though, cause you get a friction burn from playing over that sharp edge for so long.

All in all, for me, it's the best deal out there. I intend to get one myself, put some different P/Us in there, maybe a new preamp, and have a blast.

BTW, if they come out with a 7-string, I'll be all over that like a fat guy over a buffet (and I would know)

It is a stupid name for a bass but the sound speaks for itself. I really like it and I didn't have to shell out the $$$$ for a Warrior or something like that. High end sound and feel for middle range price.

i tried a five string the other day at my local GC. Sounded OK and was probably worth the money. Since I got my Stingray 4HH though,nothing compares with the tone. I then tried a Stingray 5 HH and stood back and watched as the sales guy dropped it on the floor from the top rack AND THEN HUNG IT BACK ON THE WALL. Probably won't be buying a bass there. The Ocean did seem worth the money. Just not my cup of tea.

Weird. I just saw one of these today at GC. I had to stop in for some strings before a rehearsal, and a natural finish five string caught my eye. I could only play it for like, a minute, unamplified, but I intend to head back over to GC after work tomorrow and give it a full evalutation. Seemed nice, for the cash...

And "Ocean" is fine as a brand name. Picky, picky... :scowl:

I went to GC to on Monday for the big memorial day sale they were having and I my mind was set to buy the Geddy Lee Fender Jazz. But When I played the Ocean 4-string I was totally convinced to buy it. I payed only $550 for it with some negotiating and payed less than the Fender Jazz. I got awesome deal and what an amazing bass. I really don't care what name is labeled on this bass. Come on, neck thru, bartollini pickups and hipshot tuners. You couldn't ask for more from a bass. With all respect to the maestro himself Geddy Lee, the ocean had much power and punch it couldn't compare.
