Octaver Issue - stumped

Has she been near your board?

Might want to call one of these guys

but.... i LIKE banged up grrLs!!! they... um... put WAY more effort into The Bidness then pretty grrLs do. realz.

Jake of The Basses - yeah.... i always ran my PBDI and SansAmp Bass DI with the 1/4 boost active. i get the sonic spike with and without the 1/4 active on the VTD.

well.... Matt from Wren & Cuff (AWESOME guy) talked me into putting a Boss LMB-3 (only Boss pedal i have) between the PPB and the Aggy Octo, turned off, to take advantage of it's buffered bypass. it fixed it.

i TOTALLY misdiagnosed what was the problem. it was that the PPB was putting out such a small signal turning on the octaver put it back to the correct volume, but i had turned it up so much that the "correct" volume was too loud i think. hence the volume jump.

i'm not too bright about true bypass/bypass issues.... what's going on? what's a way to fix it without adding another pedal that i don't want to my board?

grrf. ANNOYing.

It's an impedance issue, nothing to do with the PPB's output. The PPB's output is the same (roughly) as any other distortion pedal.
The aggy and PPB's blends being run together is making them get nasty with each-other. A very rare occurrence but not a defect with either pedal...

nope, not phasing, impedance... But keep in mind, this is all a hypothesis on my part. I don't have the Aggy and am going off of a description of the issues.
Basically the buffer between the two pedals levels the playing field between each, making them not "see" each other.

so..... should i put something together like this......
OpampBuffer.gif

and leave it between the two pedals?

your suggestion of setting a Boss buffered pedal turned off between them fixed the problem...... but there isn't anything Boss makes that i want on my board, especially right there.

...... and is it weird that the same thing happened with a MXR Bass Octave Deluxe?

thanks Matt!

seems to have worked for him so you must have called it. of course now he's complaining he has to have another pedal on his board...these kids today...never satisfied. they'd complain if you hung them with a new rope. especially behindy...he's such a troublemaker.

:D

i said it in the pedalboard thread, but i'll put it here to see if anone agrees / dissagrees.

Make the beavisaudio buffer, put it in the smallest box you can - i've seen a pic of someone with a buffer in a smaller-than-an-altoids box, between them. wire it always on, it just needs one more power outlet, and about 3 more inches of cable.

EDIT: beat me to it. darn you and your fast typing!

ha! no, a sad part of me ejoys drinking too much coffee and diagnosing this stuff, even though I'm not always right!

What's the common denominator? the blend...
The "BOSS" thing doesn't matter. Any non-tb pedal will work, but use a newer one, the bypasses on 80's pedals can be a little rough. Now-a-days buffer's on any descent pedal are good. Boss, DOD, Ibanez, I'd stay away from Dano tho.
Or any of the above suggestions should be fine, the beavis thing etc.
Do you use any non-TB pedals in your chain? a tuner?

..... no. i love the Pitch Black but there's not enough room on my board. i might go to the PT-2.... but i'm trying to stay relatively small. freaking PT-Pro was KILLING me.

think i'm gonna try to whack together the Beavis Audio schematic over the weekend (my weekend is sunday/monday).

thanks for all the help! lol.... GLAD all my pedals are fine, and that there looks like there's a tiny footprint solution.

you sir, rokk like birds.

thanks!

:D

but OLD rope has a better tone!

lol.... jimmy jimmy jimmy JIMMINY. you know me. i'm am SO okay with another pedal on the board. but i can't think of anything non-tb that i WANT on my board right now.

just...... not a huge fan of Boss stuff.

If you do the beavis, I'd bump the in-cap to between .22uf (220nf) and 1uf.
That said, putting another fun pedal in there is only going to cost you an inch or two of space, even compared to the really small boxes, and the buffer will do the same thing either way... and if you have one you like around, it's free.

no, I'm saying a "boss" size pedal is only a bit bigger than some of the mini buffers out there. They look small, but if you get out the tape measure the actual amount of space they take up is only a couple inches more.
Even tho I make boutique pedals for a living, and have mine and other boutiquer's on my board, my long-dash silver-screw 1980 DS-1 will never leave my board, and I'd chop off a hand if anyone tried to mod it. I even put up with it's afore mentioned crappy bypass. That thing in my chain bypassed or on is my tone. Point is, a little buffer never hurt anyone...

hurm.

now i'm all confused on which way to go. lol. you little MINX. answer the question, fix the problem, but still insert uncertainty into the equation.

well played sir.

i think i'd have to rethink my whole... wait.

HAH! you know what's awesome? the EHD Freeze isna tb. i just put it between the PPB and the Aggy and it fixes it just like the LMB-3 did. NICE.

i have to move it a little out of where i wanted it, signal chain-wise, but i don't have to take anything off i wanted or add something i'm not that into.

YAY!!!

thanks everyone!
