odb-3 or big muff? i cannot decide.

I have both and find myself using the Boss waaayyyy more. The muff is cool and I have yet you run the outputs separately to control the dry/wet mix better but I just think overdrive is as dirty as I like my bass tone. When it gets to full on distortion it seems to lose all soul of the bass. Just my opinion of course.

In short, the ODB-3 can get very, very dirty and has more tonal control but is still very simple to use. Plus it's boss, so it can survive WW3

By big muff I'll assume you mean bass big muff PI the New York made one. I own both and love both, IMO the odb-3 can get juicier and heavier than the big muff it's got a little more versaitity than the big muff but if you want to step out from the band get a big muff it's sound is big and mean it doesn't get as heavy as a odb-3 but it's still good I'd say try before you buy if you can! Odb-3 goes about half price second hand which I would recommend doing if you end up getting a odb-3

Try the Boss os-2 overdrive/distortion. A real sleeper in the bass world but it can get some amazing tones. Some of my favourite.

Boss is one of the few companies that actually makes their own quality pedal demo's for youtube. So you can check it out, but youtube compression and other filters will be in effect. A lot of times I'll use my Muff for a while and kinda dig it but then kick it off and switch to the Boss and it just sounds sooo much more like a proper bass dirt. I keep my blend knob (wet/dry) and my gain set very low (both around 9 oclock) and it's nice and dirty. If you want to get heavier it is a very responsive pedal so a little knob twiddling goes a long way. I got my Boss for 50 bucks used and the EHX for 85 new. I'm gonna get a y cable for the outputs for better blend control but I doubt I'll keep it.

Get the wren and cuff pickle pie b. It has an awesome blend knob that lets you bring your clean tone back in and get way more punch along with fuzz. youtube videos dont do it justice try it in person.

If you want a smooth warm distortion sound, save a little more cash on a tech 21 sansamp oxford.

I bought my Boss ODB-3 back in like '95. I went down to Guitar Center and lined up about six pedals: the ODB-3, a Sovtek Big Muff, a Tube Works Blue Tube, a ProCo Rat and an Ibanez Tube Screamer. I wanted to like anything but the Boss just to have something different, but the ODB-3 sounded best by a mile to me. It got me exactly the tone I was looking for, and I still love it to this day.

I know Boss is a dirty word in this age of boutique pedals, but that hideous yellow box is worth its weight in gold. In fact, I just sold the Bass Big Muff I bought last year because I couldn't get the fuzz tone I'm looking for. My new MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe came in the mail yesterday; hopefully I can get the sound I'm looking for from it--something different than what I can get from the Boss, which ain't goin' nowhere!
