It's a shame that we have to choose just one. So let's break it down.

Rush- the underdog in this triumvirate in popularity alone. By far the best musicians. They have played their own style and stayed together for 40+ years. They are an acquired taste for sure. But also merit Canadian sainthood. For our northern neighbors, only hockey is more important. Bravo sirs, you are the reason many players have practiced relentlessly, trying to match your excellence.

Lynyrd Skynyrd- the very definition of southern rock, tragically brought down Buddy Holley style. As a bass player from the '70's, if you couldn't play their songs, you couldn't play in a lot of bands. They represent classic American summer time parties: music, sunshine, beer, pretty girls and pickup trucks heading down to the swimming hole. Had they lived, they could have been the best band ever. Sadly, we'll never know.

Led Zeppelin- unabashed rock gods. An archetypal English band that proves the sum is more than it's formidable parts. So deft in their execution of so many styles, yet able to unleash a sledgehammer riff that would intimidate most heavy metal bands. Another band that was brought to a end far too soon. Who among us, dreaming late at night, hasn't pictured stepping onstage at Madison Square Garden in 1977 with that group? I sure have.

Wow....Neither LS or Rush would exist without LZ and both bands would tell you so. As for musicianship? Rush probably has the more technical rhythm section.....Alex is a weak guitarist. Does not matter. Al Dimeola, Mahavishnu John, Steve Vai are all better guitarists technically then Jimi Hendrix. Jimi Rules them all.....That said Led Zep are on a completely different plain of existence. You all are way sick of Led Zep because they remain important and popular still after all these years. They are played to death because they wrote and produced some of the most iconic music in modern history. Rush?? Meh.....Great band that exists because of Led Zep.....in the shadow of an icon. LS were fun when i was in high school. Great band. The Allman Bros are the rulers of Southern rock.....LS will never be the ONE.

All that said Frank Zappa rules.

Led Zep by a mile. Skynyrd is a good (and musically underrated IMO) band, but the southern rock thing wears on me. Rush just feels cold and sterile to me, although they seem like the nicest guys. Lee is a great bassist. Peart's drumming sounds like a drum machine to me, and while Lifeson is a great rhythm guitarist, I hate his soloing.

Zeppelin just hits the spot. A lot of it has to do with Bonham, who is just an amazing groove'n'feel machine. Plants vocals can be whiny, but he emotes beautifully. Page's playing is incredibly messy, but also full of feel, and his guitar tones are some of the best ever to be recorded. The band just had it. I'm actually not a huge JPJ fan, but the band just had it.

Yes! I agree with most of this except that I am a JPJ fan because his playing combined with Bonham's gives Zep that distinct funky rock groove...

Voted Zep.

However, none of these bands are in my top picks even for their respectice time periods.

AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Yes, and Sabbath are all higher on my list than those three. Skynard isn't on the list. LZ's influence is incredible, and they changed the playing field, but I was born at the end of the 80s. For me, Zep doesn't hold up musically as well as bands like AC/DC. Maybe if I was there at the beginning I would feel differently.

As wonderful as the musicianship is in Rush, I love the groove combo laid down by Bonzo and JPJ of Zep. Actually, the drum style is one of that band's most identifiable attributes . . .

Led Zep: musical genius with balance and artistic maturity, great singer/poor lyrics but that doesn't matter at all.
Rush: very clever, positive attitude, one song anthem band who play way too many notes to be considered particularly musical, truly horrible voice.
LS: a musical non factor, boring in entirety, with nice vocal harmonies like the TV show Glee but Southern and actually tragic, but not Southern gothic (which is interesting at least.) SanFran art band "The Residents" were actually from Louisiana where they learned about story telling. That's a good Southern band. Pylon from GA too.
