"Offensive" band names

It's a matter of being reasonable. Some people will get offended at anything, and sometimes it's done by mistake, but use common sense. Would the reasonable average person want their teenager wearing it on a shirt?

Pretty much nothing offends me. If someone doesn't like a band's name, a song title, an album title, just don't buy it, change the channel, click away, walk away, etc.

me and my friends used to make a game out of who could think of the most offensive band name, then I grew up and ended up BEING in a few bands with offensive names.

including but not limited to:

-killyourself: A poopy grindcore band thought up by my psychopathic ex-guitar player. Played one show, never played again (with him or the band.)

-Dick Fister: Another grind band I played drums for. We actually had a pretty good following and played a number of shows, using the psudonym Richard Fister before I ended up leaving for personal reasons.

-Vagina Wizard: Another game we played was "replace one word from a band with Vagina," and this was the one we rolled with. We had a decent number of shows, and t-shirts were made. Not bad for a improvisational doom/sludge/stoner band (we never jammed, just showed up and played.)


My opinion on the matter is that you should show some restraint. the first band I mentioned didn't start with that name, and I ended up quitting after one show under that name. It was too much. People can take well to a good joke but don't outright promote hate or racism or whatever

Band naming, always an ordeal. Was in an original hard rock/metal band called Skinbag a few years ago...people would cringe when they heard the name ( we copped the name from a song title from a person who had auditioned for us, gave us his demo tape).

Not offensive per se, but made people feel all ooogy...

I'd try to think of the most offensive name possible for a Grindcore band, maybe avoiding racism and things because Nazis are bad and a surprising amount of people on the hardcore/extreme metal scene are very vocal about that, but cursing is is pretty much compulsary, proper cursing too, we do it the best in Ireland.

I'd probably be a bit tamer for a classic rock band though.

Tom Petty's band Mudcrutch always seemed like it would upset some old people.

A friend of mine used to have a band called Hoof Hearted, which I think is light and fun.

I think if you are prepared to go into the public world with a name such as Black Pussy, you should also be prepared to accept the ramifications of using such a name, one of which happens to be that as your fan base matures, they'll tend to distance themselves from such a loser name anyway. Its not exactly a sound long term plan, but I'm sure the 12yr old white males will appreciate it.

If you're going to be offensive, I prefer the subversive way of doing it. Steely Dan is perhaps the best example of that.

That said, I get a kick out of offensive stuff just for comedy purposes, so offensive band names crack me up.

As for Black Pussy, you could get that one to slide through the controversy if your logo is actually a black cat or something.

The music business is hard enough without handicapping your band. Your ultimate level of success is also limited. Is "Black Pussy" ever going to be on the Tonight Show? Playing at the Super Bowl? At the Grammies? Highly doubtful.

There's a new band I've heard of, named "Perfect Pussy". Other than trying to catch peoples' attention and stand out from the massive sea of bands, there's no reason for that. I'd rather have a bland name, like U2, and let the music take me to the top.

I just checked out a couple of their songs, not half bad, definitely hear a Queens Of The Stone Age influence on some of the material. Your post about their band name put them on my radar, the controversy will help them more than anything.

I've used the band name stuN goD in several throw-together bands over the years. It's just a play on words (look at where the capital letters are) and sounds "rock n roll" but none of these bands wanted to keep using it. It's not really offensive but some just didn't want to be known as dog nuts.

black pussy isnt even offensive. people need to really get real with this political correct nonsense. If black pussy bothers you that much I cant imagine what your reaction would be if something actually bad happened to you. I actually like the name, and even if i owned a club and didnt like the name I would by no means prevent them from playing based on that alone. On the contrary I would ban anyone from entering who requested that I ban said group.

They're already thought of that. Here's their band logo on tour posters which was already their logo before all of the controversy.
