i honestly don't know... it's just the sound I think of when I think old-school punk. This is based on nothing whatsoever... whatever.

The LaBellas were very thumpy, I just felt the JO flats fit better on my bass. Maybe I'll give them another shot if I can find a used set.

the labellas are thumpy, kinda woody sound. i just strung my fretted scheff up with some chromes today, it actually sounds alot like my decade did with jo flats, but a little brighter. im putting the jo flats back on my fretless scheff...thunderous!!!

Hehe. The second time I posted it was near the end of the last thread, which finished up very quickly last night. Anyway, that's interesting. Thus far, I've been splitting it pretty much 50-50 between the single and humbucking modes--though my favorite single-coil sound is with the neck pup solo'd.
Thank you, sir. You're prolly saving your single-coil Chi time for the Decade and the incoming Silver Surfer.

Thanks, guys! Funny, not long after I posted that, I got my CAR Skyline DJ setup just the way I want it (haven't played it in a while). Then I played it with a pick along with some old-school, aggressive punk--lotsa fun!

Yes...forgot to mention...nice basses!

That's cool. Some of that old punk had such lo-fi production that rounds almost sounded like flats. I'm thinking of early Minor Threat, for example.

Just thought I'd muse for a second here about a great gig I had on Friday. I re-strung my original 44-01 with some fresh nickel rounds a few days before the gig and got it set up, intonated, etc. and all ready to go. I also, about three weeks ago, purchased a vintage 1989/1990 'transition' model SWR Goliath cab (made by Eden for SWR) in as close to new shape as it could be for being almost 20 years old. I got it cleaned up, got new corners on it, and vacuumed the 'rat fur' to get it freshened up, and we were good to go after that. It was a heck of a deal. Anyway, I paired the Goliath up with my Eden Nemesis head and brought the freshened-up 44-01 to the gig. I have to say, my Laklands always sound killer, but that Goliath cab really seems to have brought some extra mojo to the table. Big, thick, warm, and presence that could knock out a concrete wall. I know a lot of folks mod the 44-01s with better pickups, but I have to say that after this gig it reinforced the notion that the MK-1 guts are pretty alright on their own. Anyway, here is a photo or two of the cab for those interested... It's an original Goliath, not a Goliath II, BUT it has the Goliath II grille and faceplace, but without the "II" on it. An interesting piece, as a few others have told me. The cab has been cleaned up a bit since these photos were taken, so it's in quite cherry shape for its age now!

Finally, after about 3 frickin months, it's finally in my hands.
I was pretty surprised to find it already had a pearloid pickguard on it. Do they do that stock from the factory? Still has the vinyl cover on the pg, too.

(can I get a number?)
Plays pretty damn good, but I'm still getting used to the new feel. After all, I am graduating from a Squier. I bet it'll play like a dream in a few days. Gonna have to replace the funky strings with some DR fatbeams, too.

Time for a family shot! I was in quite a hurry so the photo came out like crud. I'll take some proper shots when I learn to use my camera properly...

Part 15 already!!!

OK - I will spare you the wave (at least now) because I actually have work to do but I hear I am getting blasted here for my lack of posts (especially for not posting pics of Blondie)...so consider this a "single post wave"....

sorry - since I picked her up I have been EXTREEMLY busy with family and business events ......just had a conference this weekend where I met an old friend who I knew was a bassist (has a 1970s fretless RIC and - I JUST found out - a late-1960s Starfire!!! wahoo!)...he even played with Woodie Herman for a while...


I also met a guy who played at the graduation party of Hall and Oats (they both graduated together from the same college) and went on to play with them and Jim Croce in teh studio....

this person has - what he thinks - is one of the first RIC-O SOUND basses.....I have asked for pictures etc.....will post these when they come in......the interesting part is he says it has the RIC "swoosh" bu no name....hmmmm..

anyways - we all had some good discssions at dinner and between sessions!

now - what you have all been waiting for:

A quick review of Blondie....well, she is just about everthing I expected....she is simple yet classy and beautiful...and talk about rolling thunder!

I tried it in both single and double coil mode and man! what a difference...the way to explain it is hearing thunder in the distance and then (switch to double coil) a RUMMBBBBBLLLLLE as a lighting bolt hits next door....it is THAT significant of a difference.

it has the most rumble factor (if you know what I mean) of any bass I know....

it seems to have a lack of really high end in double coil mode - I have to keep the treble way up and tweak the "passive" tone knob almost all of the way and it still seems to lack SOME high end...

THAT BEING SAID: It has great mids and lows and seems to "pop" well when snapped in the midst of a song (as most of you know, I cannot slap worth a can of beans but we play this song in church where I get to pop a few times and it sounded GREAT!)

it has grumble and rumble gallor and sits in VERY well in the mix....to be honest, I think this bass sounds significantly better in amoungst other instuments than by itself...which says alot because it sounds great by itself...it cuts through nicely....I thought it would be "too bassy" an boomy but that was not the case.....

the passive tone knob is a MUST...it influences all of the sound, even in active mode.....Carl did not think it would work in active mode but I told him that Markus' did so he tried mine and viola! I never thought I would teach Carl anything!!! well, I didn't really but like to think I did...

as you can tell, the neck is a little plain, but it is FAST and comfortable!!!!

i like the plain neck, i think too much birdseye on that would take away from the rest of it.
