Its best to be able to play with anything someone can throw at you, fingers, funk, and pick.

Some songs just don't sound right without a pick.

I prefer the Dunlop 3mm 'Big Stubby'. I grew up learning bluegrass on a felt pick, so the thick 3mm one just feels like 'home'.

I was under the impression that purple ones are 2.0mm and grey ones are 3.0mm, well that's after a friend brought me from U.S. the 2.0 instead of my last year favorite 3.0 ones, and they were in that colour.
Is that correct? Does it matter? I think I get less RH tension with 3.0 but play more accurately (especially palm muted chugging stuff) with the 2.0.

When I practice I spend time both finger striking and picking. I like to use fender heavy since they don't seem to make extra heavy any more, and I use the Dunlop Gator Skin 2.0mm extra heavy picks as well. Agtor skins gice you a really good grip.

I think the grey ones are the er, rubber-ish ones while the purple ones are like those^.

Anyways, my fav picks are the normal sized Dunlop Jazz III (both red & black)

Interesting. Little googling for big stubby variations (anything official?) it almost always says nylon. The 3.0 grey (or "dark grey" as some sites call) does not feel rubbery at all compared to 2.0 purple - both plastic to me.

Purple Dunlop's. I like 'em!

I actually used to shy away from picks becuase they would slip and slide between my finger and thumb whenever I played, so I was constantly having to adjust them. Recently I've found a way to hold them firmly and comfortably and I'm playing a lot more with a pick lately. See kids, if you set your mind right, you can do anything!

Well I used to play with a pick, now I use my thumb as a pick, does that count?=)

Right now i'm working ona hybrid technique. Thumb/index hold pick while ring, middle, and pinky do the rest. In the future I will probably just do pick, ring, middle but to get that ring up to speed with my middle I need to balance my right hand out. Maybe I will never go back from using all four fingers lol.
