Between those two, I’ve had the best sound from Ken’s strings. Still use them on my short scale.
But, lord help me, I continue to use DR Hi Beams on my fretless. In spite of some rather specific warnings from luthiers I trust, I’ve never had a single bad experience with DR’s; and they retain their tone for a long, long time.
After many experiments with strings I have settled to use D'Addario EXL220-5 on both of my Sonus basses.

DRs are it. I've played them all... super consistent and the harmonics never get weird.
Personally I don't care for DRs... in my experience with them, they have a weird honk in the midrange that can't be dialed out.
Maybe it's because I have a variety of basses in my collection, but I always match string to bass -- I don't have an overall favorite string set. Again: IME a set that sounds killer on one bass might not work with another. So yeah, the string search can be a PITA (for me).
Same's true with pickups/preamps... but strings are a bit cheaper than electronics (not to mention easier to replace).
As of last night, I'm officially part of the Zon club. I snagged a fretless 5 string Sonus from the classifieds last week, and it finally arrived. I'm in love with it already.
I ordered a set of Hybrids from Kallium last night as the start of my string search for this guy. I tune to A standard, so hopefully the .158 gauge will do me well.
And of course, no pics, no bass, so I'll be getting some pictures up after I get home from work today. I think I can hear the bass calling me from here.

I have TI flats on my Sonus 5 and like it it quite a bit. This is the only electric bass I’m using right now (mostly on upright) and I find the TI’s to be a good compromise in tones. Eventually, I want to get a dedicated precision-style bass for flats so I can put round wounds on the Sonus.
Calling all Zon players!
Have you noticed that some strings just sound better on a Zon than other strings?
Do you think the Zon neck is probably the main reason for this?
And what have you found to be the best sounding strings on your Zon?
Very curious to hear other Zon players opinions on this!
And as a side note I actually had a private message with Michael Manring here on Talkbass awhile back and he said that light gauge Daddario XL's were his favorite sounding on his Zons.
WOW!!!! Honestly on my Zon Legacy 6 I use:
D'Addario Electric Bass XL Nickel Wound 6 String Bass Long, .032 - .130, EXL170-6
I have another Legacy Elite 6 on order, and I'm going to have them put the same gauge as above when it comes time to assemble the instrument at the factory, I love D'addario XL's.

With the XL 170-6 set, I always trade the .065 A for a .060 as it really evens out the tension and makes it sound closer to the other strings.
I think the composite really compresses and evens out the the midrange. For this reason, I think 1) differences in strings are more apparent and 2) you can get away with more aggressive strings and still have them sound good.
Hi Beams for me were too bright and didn't seem to have the midrange presence of most nickel strings. Of course this was years ago, so my ears and tastes have completely changed since using them. Take my opinion with a grain of salt.

That one, I'll never sell. I suspect many others feel the same. It's hard to find a bass that easy to play that sounds that good.
