Oh GC, when will you learn?!?

If I made a gripe post about every bad bass I've seen at GC, this would be a full-time job and it would probably ruin my marriage because I'd be glued to the computer. The good thing is, TB has 235,616 members, so we can take turns.

This was honestly the most glaring mistake I've seen lately. It'd be one thing if this bass was some $300 Fender mutt. But the fact that it's $1000 and is essentially in need of a whole new NEW neck just makes it so... noteworthy.

To mtdkingstonheir's point, we've all seen a case where fixing a missing knob or bad pot or dead strings could turn a $200 sale into a $300 sale if someone gave even a modicum of a crap to make it work. And the fact that a struggling company doesn't even try just lends more evidence to the case of their eventual demise.

But when they are trying to sell someone on a $1000 instrument that is essentially firewood as it sits, well, that's just fraud. Yeah, they have a return policy. And this could boomerang for them a dozen times and they may never give a crap. Despite the credit card processing fees for each one (sale and return) piling up, no one there seems to mind.
Frankly, that not only points to a careless staff at the bottom... it proves that even the top guys and bean counters aren't willing to get involved.
And to me, it's really sad.

Along with a lot of people here, I'm very glad TB exists and we have people that call BS when it's needed. From the people who can point out the wrong set of knobs or a refin on a "vintage" piece or the ones who've been in the stores and posted about blatantly defective instruments and warned the rest of us not to buy them, it's great to know you are here. And while we all may not be experts, I've learned so much about gear through TB in general and I really appreciate that it's made me a keener observer of things when I shop. If not for TB, I may have been duped by GC a number of times! Hell, a local CL buy almost had me fooled, if not for the kind and knowledgeable people on here willing to help.
(SIDE NOTE: That thread actually put the smackdown on a local Sam Ash "expert" and he put his tail between his legs and gave the guy I bought the bass from his money back)

Keep up the good work... make sure you look out for your TB family. I want all of us to be capable of spotting the BS a mile away and hopefully preventing it from landing on any unsuspecting people who wouldn't know better.

A guy made an error. Pretty sure everyone wasn't involved. I love guitar center and buy there with confidence knowing if i do not like something i have 45 days to return it.

Word. Every single person in this thread has made a glaring mistake at their jobs, except most of them didn't have a multi-page page thread insulting them about it. I've had some bad GC experiences but at the end of the day, they are pretty easy to work with and a lot of their used gear is an exceptional deal. Heck, I just bought a mint condition used ATK805 from them for nearly half the retail price. I'd like to see y'all buy this bass in a pawn shop or even some mom & pop stores and get a refund without a big hassle.

On a related note, I went into my local GC today hoping to try out an amp. Was in the bass section for around 20 minutes hoping for someone to come by and ask if I needed help, but it never happened. There were at least 10 employees on the floor that seemed to be doing nothing. One of them was playing with his cell phone behind one of the computer stations within sight of me. The store wasn't busy at all - it was as dead as I'd ever seen it. Oh well. I left the store a bit annoyed at that point. I'll find another music store to give my money to.

I replaced the original 22 fret neck on a older American Jazz Deluxe with a newer replacement American Jazz Deluxe 21 fret neck a couple of years ago. 17" from nut to 12th and 17" from 12th to bridge. Intonates just fine too. Did not have to move the bridge, BUT I had to drill the neck for different bolt pattern, the saddles are pretty much all the way back and the E can no longer be strung through the body because the angle is just too steep. So it can be done (barely) with a 21 fret neck. Agree this would not work with a 20 fret neck without moving the bridge.

Low prices, no service. I can live with that. I was trying out a cab there. I just rummage around and find cables, a head that will suffice, and a bass and have at it. No one says boo.
I kind of dig it.

They can't win! People complain when the sales people are all over thm and they complain when they aren't. You could have just as easily gone up to one of them to ask for help, right? Nope, this makes a better story for TB...

Sure, I could have. But that's not the point. This type of thing happens to me all the time in retail situations (not just music stores), and I'm tired of doing their jobs for them. If they've got better things to do than make sales, I'll find somewhere else to shop.

Two weeks ago at a local GC I stood by the counter for ten minutes with a $200 guitar in my hand I wanted to buy for my kids. There were two employees chatting by the door who saw me, a guy moving amps around, and presumably a manager walking into and out of the office fifteen feet away. Eventually I just leaned it up against the counter and left.

More close to the main topic, about a decade ago I drove a delivery truck for a local music store, many of my friends also had jobs there. At the time Fender had a three tiered tech program. To make the minimum you needed to do string changes and setups well, diagnose problems, and be able to follow instructions to make electrical repairs and replace parts. Presumably bigger problems, once diagnosed, were elevated to the higher level techs. In our case we had an in-house repair department with guys who could handle anything.

I doubt many people at that first level would recognize why a specific oddball Fender bass needs a specific neck. Still, its on that tech for not testing it out and giving it a setup afterwards, which would have revealed the problem.

The last few times I've been in, no one has asked if I needed assistance.
It was sort of like I walked all around and looked a bunch of stuff in different parts of the store and nada.
Are jeans, a t-shirt and a hoodie over dressing or under dressing?
I wish I could be that invisible elsewhere!

Gluttons for punishment, I guess...
