Ohms Questions.

Sup dudes,

I originally posted this in live sound (sorry for the double post anyone)

I am currently designing a rig for myself and had a few power handling issues I needed help with:

Right now I have

Goliath Jr. III (8 OHMs 400 Watts)
Big Ben (8 OHMs 400 watts)

That gives me a total of 4 OHM impedance correct?

If the Xti1000 power amp I am looking at says it gives:

4 OHMs Bridged to Mono 1400 Watts 1% Total Harmonic Distortion

-Does that mean I will be endangering my speakers with that amp since they each are 400 Watts?

-Is the Total Harmonic Distortion something to really worry about

Also my goliath jr's have an input as well as an output on the back, where as my big ben only has 1 input (must be an older model). Thinking about buying a real nice tube pre-amp as well. How would one suggest I set this rig up?

First off, the easiest way to have your posts ignored is to make a cutesy title (I know this from experience). Now, onto the problem...

You can use the power amp with those speakers, but always remember that you have a volume knob and ears. If you hear the cabs starting to strain, back off the volume or else you will damage them.

Total harmonic distortion is merely a way of measuring distortion levels and means nothing for you as far as usage. All it means is that you will get 1400 watts of clean power out of the amp, and anything below the 1400w mark will have less than 1% distortion in the overall signal.

Correct. Keep in mind that the power amp can produce its maximum power with the master volume knob in any position if the preamp signal is hot enough. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that if the master volume is straight up, the amp must only be putting out half its maximum power--not true! Give your bass a good slap and you could get the power amp to clip, probably sending more than 1400 watts into the cabs. Many power amps peak at twice their rated power.

I know nothing about the Xti1000 specs, but you could probably run each side of the power amp at 8 ohms unbridged, and then you could match the difference of each cabinets spl with the gain knobs.

Would compression help that problem?

wait........so why aren't people suggesting this guy just daiseychains his cabs together so he can run a rig that would probably put out a good 700 watts @ 8 ohms and wouldn't endanger anything since he'd have a combined cab wattage of 800?

Because daisy chained or not, it will still be a 4 ohm load.
