ohms?

Yes I know, but why would I gig with a 8 ohm 4x10, If I can do it with a 4 ohm 2x10? (I'm doing it.. double the speaker surface=+3dB. double the impedance= -3dB. same speakers, brand, AMP..)
the max output may be reduced because of the 2x10... then buy a 4 ohm 4x10 instead :)
my approach, by the way.

3 dB is not much, but the other point: for 3 dB increase, you must double the amps wattage.

Well it doesnt work out quite like that.

Doubling the amps impedence doesnt exactly half the power, so you'd get about -2 or so dB, and the doubling of speaker area would be +3dB, granted, its only 1dB which is nothing, but still. What is probably more likely to aid you with the 4x10 is it being higher up, but, then again, play your 2x10 on its side, and you get the same height and no combfiltering effect.

3dB isnt that much, your right, but what does doubling an amps power have to do with things? Wattage doesnt related directly to speaker output. When talking sound your looking at dB.

Best solution is to get an amp that runs at 2 ohms anyways :p

And 15's can be good, my 2x15 has the best high end of any bass cab ive played :)
 
What I was taught, and can not find a way to apply, is what the components are designed to deliver the maximum power transfer at. Just because an amp is capable of powering a load between 8 and 2 ohms does not mean that its power transfer capablity is the same at all of those ratings. To get the most SPL you need to be running at the ohms that delivers the most power.

Check out the specs of just about any power amp on the market.

For an amp to bridge @ 2 ohms, it would have to be capable of running @ 1 ohm in stereo/dual mono mode

The Crest 10001 and Crown Macro-Tech 10,000 were the only production power amps I'm aware of that could do that.
 
Yes. If it doesn't, then it would be rated much higher while non-bridged.

Basically, bridging doubles the voltage swing, but does not increase the current output capability.

Sorry for butting in, but a clearer way of saying it may be that when bridged, each side of the bridge (or each channel of the poweramp) sees 1/2 the load. So whatever the minimum typical load for 1ch is, doubles when bridged.
