I'm really bummed... My new Dominant D string snapped ten minutes ago. I knew this could happen because dominants are known to be fragile strings and because my bass is a 43'' string lenght. Anyways I took the chance and thought they werre going to last after two weeks without problems... But it happened. Sad... I had to put an old flexocor in the mean time. Maybe I'll try matching the remaining E and A with plain guts D and G to see how I like it. I'm rambling here... The point is: I really liked the Dominants but they're not for my bass... So, any suggestions on similar strings for a 43-er? I'm thinking spiro weichs... but I dunno... Help...

Sorry to hear buddy.

Thomastik Infeld has always been really good about replacing broken strings, I think they might require a picture of the broken string but I am not sure.

In the meantime I would respectfully suggest that you enjoy the other 3 strings, they probably sound great.

Did you by any chance read the posts about installation precautions?

Thanks for the support... I don't think they'd replace my D string because I put it on a larger scale bass, even when the package clearly says 3/4. I don't really want them to replace it either because of the same issue, the new one, will most likely snap too. I did read the instalation precautions in the thread 'bout dominants breaking, as I said, I knew I was taking a chance but I wanted to try them out, I did, I loved them and lost them... that's life...

I'm enjoying the three that are left, they sound wonderfully indeed, but I'm afraid they'll snap sooner or later. So, what do y'all think? Weichs? I think they do make them in 4/4, right?

Oh... I tore up an old dry blister, doesn't hurt but I'll have to build up a callous again... Not a good day for me.

I don't think this will be a problem, just drop them an email. They might ask for the string length for their own records, but they want you as a customer to be happy.

Not necessarily, I would not give up just yet if I were you.

I think after the dominants you won't be able to stomach them.

Try getting a new D from thomastik, if by any chance it snaps as well, then try a Pirastro Chromcor D. It will be darker but it will have many common characteristics with the dominants. (IMHO the Chromcor A and especially the E are a bit flabby and have intonation issues, but the G and D are great)

I have a set of Dominants on two different basses at the moment, both 42" scale. One is about a year old, and one is about 4 months old. I pull much harder than most players I know, and I don't worry about them breaking. It's my understanding that the real danger with Dominants is when the metal part of the string touches the tuning peg directly. This shouldn't be an issue with a longer scaled bass, should it? Maybe you just got a bad one. I'd email Thomastik if I were you.

Definitely contact Connolly and Co. After the Dominant E string broke on one of my basses, I contacted Connolly, and they sent me a new string right away no questions asked. They did ask me to return the broken string in an envelope they supplied. Although I wasn't very happy about the string breaking, the customer service was excellent.

Well... I heard from thomastik today, they won't be replacing my string because stringing them up on a larger instrument is contraindicated. Bummer...

I can't help to think all the other strings in the set will snap one by one, sadly and painfully... Anyways, I'll try and enjoy whats left of them and buy another set when they go... The flexocor D doesn't sound that bad, but it's a bit dead compared to the dominants...

So I may not like weichs? How bout Obligato?:help:

In my experience, Dominats are sometimes prone to breaking if they're either not wound around the peg correctly or if you take them on and off the bass. Actually, I think a lot of strings have these issues (Obligato, Eudoxa, Oliv, Heritage...)and it only seems abnormal because so many of us are used to the almost unbreakable Spirocores.

Just be careful with the Dominants....

I'm really sorry to hear that. Shame on Thomastik, they don't even offer a 4/4 size.
